I think there are some points worth making. Firstly, even if you say this isn't aimed at the OSRS team, they are going to still read and still be hurt by it. That is the nature of having such a passionate team.

Secondly, I don't agree with the idea of OSRS being poor value. When compared with other activities the amount of hours entertainment people get from OSRS is huge. You can easily spend a whole year's subscription going to the cinema 6 times or 2 nights out at a pub. In fact it is inline with Netflix, Nowtv and Amazon Video.

However, that is not to say some things shouldn't be improved.

I'd agree that growing the community through partnerships would be a great benefit. I believe my initial statement still holds true.

The question I always had about this which I could not answer with a good conscience was "what benefit does adding them as a reward from a partnership give to the community which isn't gained by just giving them to players?".

I cannot see a benefit to the community and I'd prefer to see content like this added through the usual methods. Finding rewards for content has always been an issue and here we have a handful of rewards which can be used in a better way for the community.

Obviously I don't work for Jagex any more, but I can give some insight.

In order to do this properly Jagex would need to remake a whole load of assets, last time they did this it took a team of artists and developers 12 months plus to do it. Having this toggleable would also mean there would be an increase in the amount of work needed for each update (eg making sure everything works in both options) which will slow down how quickly updates will be delivered.

Of course, if there is a technological solution (ie something clever that just makes it work) then I am sure Jagex will snap it up. However every attempt to improve the graphics with this method has hit one of two problems, firstly the z-buffering issue (the graphics processor deciding which parts of a model appears in front or on top of another part of the model) is not professional enough to be used as a commercial product and/or the amount of processing power needed to be used requires a super high end PC.
