None of those are simple though, even ship squads are not that easy to setup (I do think they’ll be added eventually though)

First off... congrats! Sounds amazing.

From what it sounds like (based on your comments) you think the player base is too hard on CG.

But in your opinion what is something they could do better?

Theres no instruction booklet for running an online F2P licensed RPG game thats been highly successful for 5 years with no end in sight. Its happened so few times that theres very little “do this better” advice anyone could give. Its the most successful EA mobile game of all tIme and the most successful Star Wars game of all time (and its not just a “slap the license and print the money” because theres a TON of SW games out there that barely make any money)

So from that perspective, when I see the “fix your game” and “the devs are idiots” and “do this one thing if you want to fix this mode” posts ... well, you scratch your head a little bit.

I do mean to answer your question though, but a lot of it is “inside baseball” sh*t that can just be misinterpreted and weaponized and some of it is NDA’d for obvious reasons. I‘ll give you that I think feature development and live development need to be more in sync so when a big new feature like Galactic Challenges comes up it...

On a live game, dont put an anchor on something a dev said 3 years ago, thats an eternity in game development and each series is handed very differently in terms of strategy, plus the industry has a ton of churn and its very possible whoever said that has long since left the company.

I see a ton of speculation in this sub treated as fact and then seeing other people speculate further on said speculation (which is both bizarre, funny and fascinating if youre curious about how conspiracy theories are built) so I get a bit jumpy when I see anything close to that behavior. Apologies from my end as well

Ok, I’ll bite. What was your solution back in April?

Cannnnt talk about it (yet), but I can tell you that bringing The Child into the game was both a no brainer and a logistics puzzle because you want him to be visible and not stuck in the pram, which isnt exactly visually exciting, but its not like he actually DOES much on screen (lot of off screen action happening with him) IG-11 had similar problems in that visually speaking hes too similar to IG-88 and the other IG model so, besides animations, how do we make it stand out? Putting them both into one unit solves both problems as it makes the IG unit very worthwhile and distinct, while showcasing The Child in a very visible manner with a lot of potential for fun animations

Not sure if you’ve said this but why did you leave CG?

Got a chance to return to Spain (Barcelona) and art direct a new game for Scopely. Too good a chance to pass up, which in itself sucks because I felt really comfortable as an Art Lead and the career path and relationships I had made and built within EA and Lucasfilm were (and are, I left on good terms) significant

If thats how they showcase The Child, by making it and IG-11 one unit, thats actually really creative ... definitely better than my proposed solution way back in April and it fixes two big problems in one fell swoop. Big ups to whoever solved that one.

Dont “point things out” if you’re just making them up lol. The first 3 Mando toons were made after the heavy load that was the first batch of GLs, we barely had time to make 3, making 2 more plus The Child would have been impossible.

BTW, loved your work on those Marquees & Packs!

I mean, theres not much to match, its a semi realistic style and SWGOH marketing has a semi realistic style but so does most marketing artwork out there, not nearly unique enough to identify in the wild. Aside from that, you can discern individual artists painting habits, none of which I recognize in that image.

Thats def not Garrets work, I can tell you that.

And its also not mine, obviously (I painted the Mando Marquees and Packs, for your reference) Good chance its from somewhere else non SWGOH related

Those models were made first actually but yeah, when it came down to release the new season was out and it made more sense to update them. One of those things. I personally like long hair Ezra much better as a design.

Hes one of my favorite dudes at CG and completely ready for this gig, excited to see him grow in this role.

Only thing I don't miss is him calling bullsh*t fouls while playing ball ;) but hey, Kings fans, what can you do.

We did a good job on it so I “like it” but its one of my least favorite designs tbh. Its just too much. Pink engines, green lasers, just random Michael Bay Transformers esque detail... not a fan

First of all, thanks for posting here. It is nice to see optimism and realism coming from someone who worked on the team previously.

As someone with knowledge of the upcoming big feature, I have a question for you. For months my alliance has been dwindling, people are burning out faster than we can replace them. Lately we have not gotten content that could really bring guilds together towards a common goal except for the TBs, and light side has been more frustrating than anything else.

I am concerned that the only things we've gotten this year have been focused on the player alone, and tend to not take up much time. The Jedi Luke event was fantastic, and the galactic challenges seem like they'll add a lot for individual players once fully implemented. Right now I know we're still in the "grand arena" phase of "grand arena championship", so I'm holding criticism until we get to that point.

That said, without giving away any real details, do you think t...

Sorry bud, but it would be a huge breach of trust for me to hint at any upcoming content ... plus, at some point I wont even know what that content will even be.

See? Again, conspiracy theories.

Look at my dev Q&A's, I use the exact same tone and was just as thorough except I use more profanity on my personal account ;)

I know you're probably under an NDA and can't talk about much, but could you answer two hopefully vague questions?

  1. Do you still play the game?
  2. Are you excited about the future of SWGOH?

Ya sure, NDA’s are a fun legal thing and all but Ive been in games for over 15 years and I love and respect the teams I worked with so Im not gonna be out there spilling company secrets ... which honestly tend to be weaponized and misunderstood by the community anyways so theres very little to gain by being a leaky faucet just to score internet points

  1. I still play the game daily, almost at 4 million GP on a F2P account. Just got the toons I’ll need for Jedi Luke so GL Luke is actually looking somewhat feasible
  2. I am! Otherwise I wouldn't be playing. I am pretty busy with everyday life and the new job so its not like I got time to waste on games I dont like. I like the next big feature coming out (yay secrets) and the next big character releases are ones I wish I was still there to work on

I think thats a fair point, and I am sure most reasonable players would be ok if things changed because the internal direction changed. The issue is that, in the entire year since that Q/A, the only content we've got was GC(Which I really enjoy). I understand that things take time, but for an entire year to pass with basically one added piece of content is a hard pill to swallow. On top of that, they haven't even hinted on anything that is to come or is being worked on. We all want the game to be better, but they can make it so damn hard.

The " most reasonable players would be ok " bit doesn't really exist, the players telling us to eat sh*t and die must feel like they're the ones being reasonable while CG is the one being unreasonable. Yes I'm being a bit hyperbolic but remember that whatever bit of feedback you see here on reddit is only a very small piece of the whole pie that the developer gets to look at and react to.

With live games its more often than not a bad idea to announce things too far in advance (older players will remember that bit in the cantina with the "coming soon" sign that was there for years. If you communicate too early it can put you in a bunch of problems because it sets expectations that grow outside of your control. We communicated early about GL's and people took it as bragging and overpromising, we spoke too soon about the potential raid and people think were lying and scheming when in reality we just weren't able to do the raid when it came time to make it, if we tell you eve...

I mean, that was the plan back then, I can attest to that.

Thing is, its game development, plans change and its often for reasons we cant talk about. This happens all the time with console games that have 5 year dev cycles and you never hear about it, but with a live game its much more pronounced since you get to hear about most things every few months.

Ah, the weird conspiracy theories never cease to amaze.

I said this plenty often back then, the first batch of GLs was the start of a new production pipeline and the team would get better at it over time. This was proven by the Mando releases, JKL and now this, which is built on that foundation. This is what the iteration process working properly looks like.

Oh by all means, they still haven't filled the vacancy I left. Good luck!

I dont think you’re ready for the literal tons of red tape that come with potentially changing a screenshot for a billion dollar game in an app store that has to go through multiple approval levels of multiple executive offices across multiple companies but hey, you never know.
