I also thought of Jagged Alliance 2, though it's not exactly rapid and it's not really permadeath.

To clarify, I'm not just interested in any roguelike game, but specifically ones with the two-stage structure.

@MaskedGikame Great games! But not really the same thing; these are games where you travel around a big map killing things, I'm looking for the two-stage structure with overmap and encounters that last 20-180 seconds.

@marcusround There's an overmap where you choose encounters or where to go, and then there's an encounter screen.

@_ActualAli Played it - fun, but it's not a two-stage roguelike and it's not single-player.
