The same thing happened to me recently, You just have to wait about 2-4 days and it'll automatically give your purchases back.

It's not that they don't know how to climb a mountain before you research it. It's that they don't have the logistical power or infrastructure to sustain an army on a mountain before you do. Or at least that's my head canon.
