On this day, 77 years ago, the Ki-96 first flew. The Ki-96 was intended to replace the Ki-45 and thus had a similar design albeit larger and with more powerful engines. The plane was not adopted in the end, but its wings and tail unit would later form part of the Ki-102.

In September 1942, 78 years ago, the Consolidated B-24D-25-CO Liberator made its first flight. The B-24D-25-CO had waist guns in full swivel mounts installed due to combat experience, bringing the total guns to 8. It replaced the B-17 in the Pacific and also fought over Europe.
In 1998, 22 year ago, the Leopard 2A5 first appeared. This further evolution of the Leopard 2 is characterized by its wedge-shaped add-on turret armor. While Germany has moved onto improved models, the 2A5 continues to serve with several countries across the globe today.

In September 1941, 79 years ago, the Boeing B-17E Flying Fortress made its first flight. The B-17E featured a MG turret in the back and a larger tail. The E variant was one of the main variants with 512 built and saw combat in the Pacific and over Europe at the start of WWII.

In September 1943, 77 years ago, the Sd.Kfz. 234/2 Puma appeared for the first time. The Sd.Kfz. 234/2 used the 5 cm KwK 39 cannon and was the second variant in the 234 series. It first saw combat in Normandy and then at the Seine River, until it was replaced by later variants.
