Nazgrim, Thoras Trollbane, Sally Whitemane, and Darion Mograine—the Lich King’s Four Horsemen—travel to Icecrown, hoping to ascertain their master’s inscrutable plans, and put an end to them if necessary.

“And we are certainly unprepared. What has changed? What force now compels you to keep us at bay?”

“Sylvanas Windrunner.”

Thoras Trollbane hesitated. Windrunner? The Lich King had kept an interest in her since the Fourth War started, telling his Four Horsemen to report any rumor of her whereabouts but absolutely forbidding them to hunt her down themselves. But Bolvar had also told the Horsemen she had never shown anything but contempt toward the Helm. “What of her?”

“Her war has upended the balance between life and death. Death feasts, and the power of the Helm boils,Bolvar said. “The Legion turned our world into a charnel house, yet I felt nothing of the sort then.”

Now that we’re less than a week away from the release of Shadowlands, we hope you’ve had a chance to play around on the pre-patch and glow up your characters with the new character customization options! While you were fiddling with new hair styles and eye colors, you may have wondered what it takes to overhaul a major system that has been progressively expanded upon with every expansion; so stay a while, and read about how we helped bring these new options to life!

A Little History

When World of Warcraft originally shipped, it was our utmost priority to make the game playable for as many people as possible. To do this, the minimum specifications had to be optimized so a wide variety of hardware could run the game. As such, compromises had to be made. Should individual fingers be added to characters’ hands when it could impact frame rates, or should that processing power be directed at a gameplay feature instead? Since ...

Updated Nov. 10: Players now must be level 50 to be eligible for the pre-launch quest, “An Urgent Request.”

Azeroth’s darkest days are upon us.

After Sylvanas Windrunner shattered the Helm of Domination, the dead are no longer shackled and now freely rampage across Azeroth, spreading blight and turning the living into mindless corpses. As we fall, they rise in number, and threaten to snuff all life from Azeroth.

Heed the Call

For the next two weeks, you can heed the call to fight back against the fallen and protect Azeroth’s inhabitants. The call to arms quest “An Urgent Request” will be offered to level 50 players and begin a storyline in your faction’s capital city where several notable faction heroes will share their reports of the ramifications of Sylvanas’ actions.

The opening week of the ...

As World of Warcraft has evolved, our policies have also evolved to support the health of the game and the needs of the players. We’ve examined the use of third-party input broadcasting software, which allows a single keystroke or action to be automatically mirrored to multiple game clients, and we've seen an increasingly negative impact to the game as this software is used to support botting and automated gameplay. The use of input broadcasting software that mirrors keystrokes to multiple WoW game clients will soon be considered an actionable offense. We believe this policy is in the best interests of the game and the community.

We will soon begin issuing warnings to all players who are detected using input broadcasting software to mirror commands to multiple accounts at the same time (often used for multi-boxing). With these warnings, we intend to notify players that they should not use this software while playing World of Warcraft. Soon thereafter, the warnings...

An army of undead and a powerful, missing artifact complicate Flynn Fairwind and Mathias Shaw’s treasure-hunting adventure in this thrilling tale, the prequel to Exploring Azeroth: The Eastern Kingdoms by Christie Golden.

But the spymaster was all duty in the next heartbeat. “We may be heavily protected, but there’s going to be a lot of wild undead out there. Many of them won’t be stopped by a blade—or your cutting remarks.”

Flynn stealthily reached for his flask, accidentally stealing a glance down. Duskwood’s thick tree canopy hid most of what was going on along the roads. But not all of it. The road was moving.

It was as though a dam had been broken. Bodies ungentled by the soft light of the moon surged toward Darkshire. Here and there were patches of light, but that offered no comfort. If the flood was truly composed of animated corpses, it would take a miracle to turn the tide.

Greetings heroes of the Horde and the Alliance,

On behalf of the entire World of Warcraft team, I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank-you for your patience as we’ve continued to work on Shadowlands, and for all of the words of support after we made the tough decision to delay the game. Today, I’m happy to share that the expansion will be arriving November 23 at 3 p.m. PST (November 24 at 12 a.m. CET).

We’d like to thank everyone across the WoW community who helped us get where we are today, including players leveling up new characters in the Shadowlands pre-patch (and keeping Azeroth’s barbers extra busy), as well as all the beta testers who continue to provide us with invaluable feedback on the expansion.

Since we first told you about our decision to delay, we’ve used the time to further polish the expansion and shore up the endgame, including overhauling the combat and rewards in the Maw, and reworking the Covenant systems to make...
