If you dismount and not set your horse to stay, he’ll follow and try to engage in the fight in the same manner as a thrall would, which is intentional.
Being able to hurt your followers is also an intentional mechanic of combat, certain weapons and attack animations are more ideal than others when fighting together with companions.

Although it’s likely related to an older issue as it has been mentioned, any additional information would be great!
The thrall counter is being worked on. We’re aiming to release it before the limit gets implemented so players can prepare for it.
Any other speculations beyond that are tinfoil territory that is feeling quite tiresome at this point.

We’re currently aware of the UI issues, they are being looked into by the developers.
The thrall system changes had been announced a while ago, and we had mentioned that we would be unable to update already placed thralls to benefit from this system, more information here:

We have no ETA for when it will it the Official servers, but it should be announced at that time.
