Missing in action after the Johnston eventually sank, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
During the Battle off Samar, Johnston repeatedly pressed attacks on much larger Japanese ships, with torpedoes and gunfire.
She also single-handedly forced seven enemy destroyers to turn from their advance.
The USS Johnston was a Fletcher-class destroyer commissioned in October 1942, and which saw service in the Pacific theatre.
Her most famous action took place during the Battle of the Leyte Gulf, in October 1944.
