The primary reason is that when we are close to rotation (e.g. after M21), we don't want to be running draft formats that will soon be rotating out. In order to keep the cycling-format drafts have a variety of sets, we're more likely to run these formats now, when rotation is not soon.

Today's maintenance is currently in progress, and adding these events is part of the deployment. Everything should be hunky dory once maintenance is complete.

Ranked Draft Core Set 2019 will happen as scheduled (alongside Ranked Draft Theros Beyond Death).

Thanks for the report, I'll take a look tomorrow! #wotc_staff

Following up: The lack of shuffling is due to comparatively peculiar wording of Ranger of Eos compared to newer "may search" cards. Look at [[Heliod's Pilgrim]], for example: "may search... then shuffle", vs. Ranger of Eos's "If you do, shuffle".

Our code currently treats selecting nothing as an answer of "no" - this allows us to make things like "you may sacrifice a creature" be a single request of "choose a creature to sacrifice, or nothing". But "failing to find" in a search shouldn't be treated as a "no" response, so I've now fixed it so it doesn't. Expect this change to go live with Ikoria's release.

Any thoughts on the current workshop? I've been playing Orzhov, almost exclusively see Gruul, and destroy them every. single. time.

Sure. As we were starting up the Workshop series, we were looking at all kinds of sources for decks content - this is a new feature, and it wasn't clear (still isn't!) what kinds of things players would enjoy or hate. One source we tapped was the old NPE precon decks that you see here (and there's another Workshop coming in a few weeks that uses a different set of decks from the same family).

For a couple reasons, this Workshop didn't get as much direct scrutiny during development: one, these decks came from that common source, and two, having three decks is a bit of a backstop for lopsided matchups (as players can go try the third deck instead of beating their heads against the unfavored one). We certainly don't want to put up an imbalanced scenario, but we have limited time and attention, and we focus them where we think they will do the most good.

That said, regardless of the "expected" deck balance, experience with the tools will make a noticeable diffe...

I won’t lie, Thassa and Callaphe were easily the two cosmetic rewards I’ve been the most excited about and while a Blue Singleton Mirror Event has amazing flavor, I guess I was expecting another cool emblem

Edit: I really did enjoy this event despite my own grandiose ideas for what I thought it was going to be. Like I said, the flavor is phenomenal and that’s why I play the game! I definitely plan to do the event either on or off stream, but my ideas for what it was going to be have absolutely no bearing on the validity of event design!

Sadly, our Emblem Guy headed off to a deserted island with some animal friends at the last minute, so here we are... ;)

I kid, I kid. Really, we just try to mix up the types of events we offer, especially within a connected series like the Festival. Different Magic players like different play experiences, and we want to provide a wide spread - something for everyone, you know? Emblem events are sweet, but they can be taxing for newer players who don't own the more offbeat cards, and many players just don't enjoy building a whole new deck for a temporary event.

I hope you still got those styles and that it was at least interesting for you, even if it wasn't what you were expecting. And thanks for the feedback! #wotcstaff

Staying Connected During COVID

Hello Magic fans,

As we continue to grapple with COVID-19, we here at Wizards of the Coast are doing what we can to help players, local game store owners and fans stay as connected as possible while practicing social distancing. We have an article discussing some of our initiatives here, so please be sure to read through it. The goal of this specific post is meant to help players, local game store owners and fans all connect with one another. You’ll see LGS owners and community members post links to their store’s online community hub here, where you can discuss any online tournaments they may be hosting, whether those are on MTGO, MTG Arena or even a FaceTime call of a fierce tabletop game. If you don’t see your LGS here, check their other social media channels or the Store Locator to see how you can stay connected with your local play community...

Workshops remind me of Tavern Brawl in Hearthstone, where the developer also gave little looks behind the curtain every so often. One of the things that surprised me was how work-intensive they were, for something that the player base ended up taking for granted--does that match your experience too? I'm glad these exist but I hope it's not a huge pain.

Yes, a lot of these are a lot of work! For the rules engine, there's especially a lot of coordination problems for juggling data around, e.g. for adding novel cards to Momir events. Not to mention the challenges for our designers! #wotc_staff

I think this type of workshop post mortem would be really interesting, if you were inclined to do it every so often. As ever, I enjoyed trying to win with both decks in this event.

I'll be around. :)

This is a somewhat delicate matchup. Both decks have nigh-unbeatable draws, and games can be quite precipitous. The difference between, say, playing an accelerant to help offset a land-light draw, versus losing it to a Drill Bit, can make the rest of the game look either pedestrian or impossible.

That said, this one did turn out kind of harsh. It's almost exactly 60/40 for Empty Throne, which is outside the range I consider "successful," even for an event that only requires one win. (For some background, the enchantments deck had a lot of trouble taking off during testing - too many hands that just petered out or folded to a little disruption. I spent multiple iterations boosting its resiliency and adding a little inevitability, but it seems I Went Too Far.)

Thanks. While this did work for me, I finished all of the color challenges last night, after which a "Waiting for new quest.." "Earn a new deck tomorrow" marker appeared in the interface with a timer. However, as of tonight right now, the timer shows 0:00 and nothing has changed. I don't seem to be able to continue with those quests.

edit: should note that last night I unlocked the Gruul Clans deck.

edit2: do regular quests no longer work in bot match mode? I'm not making progress on my summon creatures quest at all by playing bot matches.

If you do not receive the next quest after 20 hours (restart to be sure), you should contact support. They should be able to get you back on track. We will be working to make sure this isn't happening to others.

Re: Quest progress in bot match. After the Color Challenges are finished, you need to play with other people to get quest progress. This was true in the previous New Player Experience as well, but we have expanded the modes that give quest progress to include direct challenge and historic play. The play queue will try to match you with other new players (and similar deck strengths), so that might be the best place to go next for quest progress.

Hopefully, that helps!

Hello! You are probably in this state because you did not complete all of the previous first-time player experience.

If you want to get back all of your previously unlocked modes without playing through any of the Color Challenge content, go to the Gear icon at the top right of the screen, click "Account", and then click the "Unlock Play Modes" button.

Let me know if that doesn't help!

You may have not finished the previous first-time player experience, so you were reset to the start of the Color Challenge.

To get back all of your previously unlocked modes (without playing through the Color Challenge content) go to the Gear icon at the top right of the screen, click "Account", and then click the "Unlock Play Modes" button.

Sorry I didn't catch this comment earlier. Let me know if you still have problems.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or if I just don't understand the rules of the game.

I played Theros draft. My opponent attacked with a Venomous Hierophant (3/3) equipped with Aspect of Lamprey (doesn't affect the power). I blocked with my Soulreaper of Mogis (2/3) and Gary (2/4). The result was that both of my guys died. Shouldn't one of them have lived on, as the Hierophant had enough power to kill only the first blocker? Or am I just mistaken? Nothing else was played to affect the power of the Hierophant or the defense of my guys.

The Hierophant has deathtouch - a single point of damage from a deathtouch source is lethal, so it is able to assign one damage to the Soulreaper and the rest to the Merchant (which is the default assignment in Arena). #wotc_staff

That's because you're only trying to solve the situation where dryad loses its ability, and not thinking about all the other possible interactions.

Alright, first off, let's do as you say and put it in layer 1. That puts it before copy effects, such as clone. Imagine the following situation. I have a [[clone]] that copies a [[wind drake]]. You put [[Ichthyomorphosis]] on it. Does my clone still have flying? Well, if ability loss is in layer 1, the answer is yes, because it loses its abilities first, then becomes a copy. Is that more intuitive?

Alright, so clearly, copy effects need to happen before. What about if we put ability loss as layer 2. That means it happens before control changing effects. Imagine you have [[Archetype of Imagination]] and a wind drake. Your opponent uses [[control magic]] to steal your wind drake. Does the stolen wind drake have flying?...

Figuring out a way to hide cards that aren't collectable by opening packs (or at least mark them somehow in the UI) has been on my to-do list for a while. Sadly, the data isn't redily available in the deck editor. Not sure when we will be able to make it happen.

Other than that, there is nothing else we are planning to add to the advanced search.

Thanks for the report, fixed it up! The fix should be live when Ikoria releases. #wotc_staff

Hey folks! There's still a little time to go before we reveal anything about Ikoria. You'll see us talking on our social channels and Daily MTG leading up to the reveal, so it'll be hard to miss when it does happen. Until then, stay tuned.
