Yes it is still happening but it got delayed a bit.
If I remember it correctly, the devs originally planned to release the Ancients first, but during development noticed that it would be better if they rework the naval gameplay before them which was long on their bucket list. Now they can develop the Ancients with the new naval warfare in mind instead of having to change them later again.
The devs will now be probably also occupied with balancing the new Ocean Update. After that the Question is what the devs will do first. Rework the other special tribes, which they confirmed will happen, or bring out the Ancients first.
Either way it will probably be a while till they come out.

Would be cool if beta players had an option though to seek out beta players like a toggle or something. Its already coded to know different versions.
Although the discord is available and easy to use, i consider it a hassle to use separate applications, seek out a game, create a game with code, etc. Not to mention the visual clutter of havings a thousand friends or friend requests.

We have a hard rule against adding new Regular tribes, so, no, only Specials from here on out.

Then we find out that the Imperius tribe was created through treachery, when the city of Sumtemus sent cloaks to backstab all the other city leaders. Now we discover that they have North Korean levels of control over what enters and exits their country...
The catch being, they are, in fact, the cleanest and most organized place on the Square.
