Our game is not being crowdfunded, though! Stormgate is fully funded to release. This Kickstarter gives us funding to do things for our players that we did not budget for, like producing Collector’s Editions and inviting more players to beta.

I worry a little bit that they’ve given themselves a lot more work to do for these goals than the money really allows, but if we’re here, then we’re believers and gotta trust lol.

Our producers and leadership carefully vetted our stretch goals to make sure they would not put the project at risk. The additional funding at these milestones would offset the additional developer resources needed.

Also note that the cost to employ a single person for a single year is more than their salary. Insurance and other benefits, additional tax on all the companies support systems like hardware and HR and lots of others. In my experience this can be 40k or more.

The profit margin likely won't be large for this game. They will need our continual support. I backed the kickstarter but I'm certainly planning to spend money this summer on early access as well.

We appreciate the support! 💙

I believe the devs said heroes were only for the coop & campaign modes early on when people started saying they didn't like RTS's with heroes.

Not entirely sure where they said it so i could be wrong and they could have changed their minds by now but until someone tells me otherwise, i assume nothing has changed.

Heroes will be in 3v3

I truly hope their monetization plans work, I want the game to succed even if I'm not a fan of the artstyle. The gameplay looks solid and we need new RTSs.

The biggest problem I see is that, if their main revenue will be tied to DLC campaign modules that they want to sell, they really need to get people to care for the characters of those campaigns and their story.

Right know all artworks and concepts of characters are like "cool guy number 7284812049", "badass woman number 28481088427" and "evil demon rawr!!", not really intriguing or interesting.

Appreciate the feedback and thanks for wishing us well! I think you're right--we haven't done enough to get people to care about our characters and we'll need to discuss how to tackle that as we continue our journey.

Great post.

I love that people are having fun playing the game at such an early stage. That fills me with hope for the future.

If I have to pick something from the game specifically, I think the Weavers look awesome--creepy and super distinctive.

The game itself looks great so far, but I am with you that the trailers are lacking. Though I don't think the quality of the trailer matters in the long run too much, I think it does still impact the excitement of more casual fans that are not already invested in SC/WC3/AOE.

I have shown the SC2 trailer to people that have no involvement in RTS or even gaming, and they get excited over it. The Stormgate reveal trailer this year, or at the Summer Game Fest last year, have not been nearly as engaging in my experience.

That being said, neither of these seemed to be intended as a cinematic trailer in the way that the SC2 reveal trailer was. For all the issues that did surround SC2 around its launch, they certainly knew how to reach a large audience and hype up the launch (though it did obviously help massively that it was a sequel to BW).

For the sake of reaching an audience further than what we already have in the RTS genre, I hope they tighten the direction o...

In case you're curious, this video from way back in 2013 (featuring Heart of the Swarm) is a good watch and gives you a sense of what went into Blizzard cinematics, like spending an entire year on a 2-minute scene. The budgets and team sizes are way, way bigger now, too.

My pleasure. I'm hyped.

Post

It was the year 2013, and I was at Blizzard Entertainment, working a shift at BlizzCon. I was part of the team responsible for giving game demos and monitoring our press room.

I was playing and watching a ton of League at the time, so I freaked out when, who would I see walking the convention floor, other than Dyrus and TheOddOne.

I had to come over and snap this photo and let 'em know I was a huge fan.

Fast forward to today, and I'm working at Frost Giant Studios on a new RTS: Stormgate.

I follow Dyrus's twitter account and saw him post recently that he's hungry for a new RTS from the GOATED devs who used to make RTS at Blizzard--many of whom are now on our team.

Now I get to share that Dyrus, TheOddOne, and WildTurtle are gonna get together to livestream our RTS this Saturday at 1pm PT.

Sadly i don't remember anymore which skill it was :-S
But was something like "bruned" instead of "burned".

In the Stream of Grubby he discovers it.

I was joking—I fixed the typo and was pretending it never existed. Thanks for the help :)
