u/F8RGE thoughts on a post like this gaining lots of traction in the subreddit

There's nothing I can realistically say here that won't end up as a headline on a website or used as YouTube clickbait. So not sure what is expected, it's also not really my place. I'm aware that everything I say reflects on my team members, and even if it's just a throw away comment, it can quickly turn into "DICE says..." as if it's some sort of studio mandate.

Yes, I'm a part of the team but that does not mean I should be speaking publicly about anything and everything. Let alone speaking about something related to finance, because it's not my area of expertise at all.

Important thing to note is that this sub has more eyes on it from the game team than perhaps you'd expect. I know for a fact that there are even a few dedicated souls scouring new. So when a post like this appears, or anything that gets even remotely 'hot' (in Reddit terms), it's almost certainly been seen by countless people.

Again, not the answer you're probably looking for, but wanted to...

Thanks for the reply regardless.

Dozer is Mexican, not US Army. Although he used to be.

Thank you for clearing it up <3 do you also get points for assisted kills or anything else in transport aircraft?

Yes to gaining assists (and the XP that comes with it) while you're transporting people around.

I assume point system will be in the final game. Everything else would make nonsense spotting also needs to be rewarded.

This is improved at launch. You'll get XP if you're piloting a vehicle and a teammate spawns on you. Similar for events such as resupplying ammo, spotting etc.

I used a library growing up, which had a PC that could be used. Libraries have only gotten better over the years. But it is a fair point you bring up.

There are multiple out there. Hopefully next time the tank goes easy on you and can finish your listening. Thank you for the pleasant conversation.

Ah, good to hear. Worth keeping an ear out for more of that, especially as you travel across maps.

Which one did you hear?

And it sure seems like they didn't.

Day 1 of the beta and we're already in the territory of people losing their jobs. Have you ever asked yourself why you don't have more devs interacting with players across the industry?

There's a valid way to give feedback, I don't think anyone on the team is against receiving it when it's done in a constructive way. But the amount of personal attacks I've seen in just a few hours since it went live is disappointing.

Everyone that contributes to our UI are fantastic people, super colleagues and talented developers.

Are factions map-specific? For instance, the beta map is a Pacific island, so the US faction is Marines--if it's a city siege or a forest map, would the US faction change to US Army?

I ask because several vehicles (Apache, Little Bird clone, tanks, which Marines no longer use) are Army vehicles, while others are Marine vehicles. I also noticed Dozer is a US soldier. It would be cool since the Army is never in modern BF games for some reason.

It's USA and Russia, with you playing as No-Pats on each side. The vehicles are what you'll use across all maps.

Dozer is Mexican.

Orbital is located in French Guiana, not a Pacific Island.

Y'know, you guys should one day go in-depth about the process of game development and what goes on behind the scenes for stuff like beta/preview builds and what that timeframe looks like. That'd make for a great Battlefield Briefing!

I think going deeper into how games are made would greatly benefit the industry as a whole. Does come with its own set of challenges and obstacles to overcome.

I played Conquest today in a playtest and could see my deaths, if that helps.

You guys really need to streamline the control options, there are so many settings just strewen around so many sub-menus.

It's something we've done. Moved things around so they are better placed, reworded how some things are called to give greater clarity, better descriptions and previews etc

Then why aren’t we testing the latest working build ?

Because we're still working on it. It's not advised to release a piece of software that is actively being developed on. You always need that hardening window to help stabilise and fix critical issues etc.

It's super unclear whether a setting is on or off when it's highlighted.

To confirm, that has been improved in our latest builds.

This is a super simplistic version, and doesn't do justice to the work involved.

It's the nature of software development. We work in branches, so while we have our launch day branch any spin-offs (betas, demo, E3, gamescom etc) all get created from it.

The beta was taken a few months ago from our main build, and from there you then go into hardening mode. This is where you focus on bugs, stability and no further work should get checked in. With each check-in, comes the risk of new issues coming up (as is the case with Software Development). We're making so many changes to the build so you have to make a call between locking the build or stopping active development.

We don't want to stop development of our launch build, so you have to 'cap' the branched build (in this case the beta) at a specific time.

This won't be unique to us, this is how the industry will operate as a whole.

The same thing will happen to release builds the clo...

Been a lot of improvements to the options menu for launch. The above video is a bug that has been squished. Nuances that come with a build that's a few months old.
