This is day one of an update that adds lots of new items to the economy. Not everything is going to be available at once. Once people start farming the new items more consistently this will no longer be an issue. :)

Can you explain the reasoning behind this design?

Frogs are level 42 animal, Stinkshroom is level 103 Mushroom.

IIRC insects are eaten only by Frogs and Salamanders, and Salamanders also eat flowers (so woad leaves) so there's absolutely zero reason to farm for Insects if you are going to breed Salamanders. That leaves you only with Frogs

Stinkshrooms were added as the primary resource for obtaining insects. We added the ones in the shop as a cheaper alternative and also to help ironmen. Players with a lower level in farming are still able to buy these off other players.

The stinkshroom that can be planted in mushroom patches gives a stackable insect alternative. The stock available in shops is available as a cheaper alternative but requires more effort.

Is there an easy way of getting insects without the ge? my iron is gonna be cutting wrists doing 40 trips back and forth between the shop and bank every few days lol

Stinkshrooms provide a stackable insect resource once you gather the seeds :)

You'll find that this doesn't work as you expect :)

/u/jagexcamel, can you help us out?

The idea is for the animals to be rare but obtainable. The large majority of animals will enter the game via players breeding and then selling offspring etc.

On release of the farm we will monitor the rate of animals coming into the game and adjust either breeding rates or animal drop rates as needed.

Also will the eggs become tradable once the ranch comes out or will they always be untradable? Also contradictory to what was said on stream.

Thanks

As far as I know the drop rates will be the same after release. This may change however if balancing see fit. Eggs will have the same trade restrictions as the current POF eggs once the RooT is released.

We have something in mind for zygomites. It was not ready to be released with the nerfs however.

You can obtain unchecked eggs via breeding if you have the collector farmhand applied to your breeding pen. You can also sell all types of animals to other players. Only unchecked variants can be sold on the grand exchange however :)

It's worth remembering that the non breeding pens do not have failure mitigation like the breeding pen. With the small changes to breeding times this will be noticed more than before. Traits should be looked at alot more now after the nerf. I find having parents with the studly trait is helping me when breeding animals.

It is absurdly difficult to produce enough animals to supply the buyers, especially the small pen buyer, unless you are free all day to game the breeding ticks. Why were the amount of animals that are required to fulfill the buyers’ orders not decrease, with the amount of beans per animals increased, if you planned on making breeding success more rare?

It is still possible to buy animals off other players to complete these contracts. It's also possible to horde animals like I do and then sell them all later in one big bulk.

Ensure your animals are adult or elder. I've fallen for this before as the farmhands stops your animals at adolescent. My chinchompas seem to be breeding fine =)

Yes. Although due to the confusion for ticking of the breeding log we really had two options:

1 - Allowing breeding an Araxyte spider to tick off the breeding log. 2 - Prevent Araxyte spiders from being able to breed non shiny Araxyte spiders.

We went with the second option as the first one would have made the achievement of breeding a shiny spider void.

Comment

Araxyte spiders breeding araxyte spiders was a bug. The only way to obtain an actual araxyte spider is from killing Araxxi. This now means that only the 'shiny' araxyte spiders can be bred which will correctly tick off the breeding log. Previously it was possible to breed a non shiny which was confusing people as to why their breeding log was not ticked off. Hope this helps =)

Edit - Araxyte spiders now default to breeding spirit spiders.

I assume you harvested from them at 0% health and happiness then? Be sure to use honey or flavored milk to raise their stats =)
