As u/eisthefifthletter_ stated in another comment, the game used to have Guard Towers, but was removed because it was unfun.
The lack of defensive structures is actually intentional, as we don't want the game to be about turtling, as that'd slow things down too much, just like the Guard Towers did long ago.

But we don't want to make this, honestly. We like the current theme, and don't plan to move from it.
I think the developers want to keep with a late medieval theme. That being said Polaris have an early Da Vinci style tank which could be said to be slightly more advanced than the other tribes.
Yes, and the Ice Fortress is only possible with their tech level because of Gaami magic.

I think that’s all Aquarion needs, to get honest. It’s easily one of the best late game tribes, the only issue is getting to that point.
Midjiwan says they need some redesigning. Like, they need more gimmicks like the others.
