That they do, but they are meant to be part of a larger whole.

Land Combat is still a major focus of the game, but there's nothing wrong with improving the naval aspects. Spamming one unit is boring, and we'd like the game to be a blending of both land and water requirements, which was the intention when Battleships were first added to the game.

That's why Pangea was added alongside a new Continents. We're trying to give you reasons to do one, the other, or both, as they all have their uses.

That's what Pangea is for.

We'd like the game to be a blend of both land and water content, as both should be important.

Well, besides the massive naval spam of this update, which requires serious re-working of one’s perception of how to gain visibility on the map, or even how to power project, things like the removal of the Fortify affect for Swordsman feels dumb and one-sided. Further, If you are playing a race like Elyrion, where you don’t get normal Giants for six turns like every other race, you’re hamstrung trying to power project and also defend your lands until you can get a few mature giants. Honestly it’s not a pleasure to play anymore since noon today.

The removal of Battleships was part of our want to remove any "one size fits all" units. BS's did too many jobs too easily, and that's why the unit was split into 3. It should be easier to get on the water, but also easier to counter opponents on the water as well. Just because they have more ships doesn't mean they're winning, and that's what we wanted to espouse with this update.

A more tactical naval game.

Mostly the extreme focus on naval combat? I really never experienced a frustration with naval units that would necessitate a massive upheaval in favor of naval combat.

Naval Combat was one of the biggest complaints that we'd hear about on a regular basis. No one liked Battleship spam, and we wanted to make water content a bit more lively.

That was our goal, a more robust naval game where you have options.

Hate this update. This game has been my daily driver for relaxation since 2016 and this is the most impactful of all the changes since then. Most of the previous updates have been great but this one… don’t know.

What don't you like about the update?

Why would you say that?

This is probably great for PVP players. For people who liked to play AI games on their own, this didn't really add anything.

It added tougher AI and more water options.

And that's coming from me, a bot fighter. :)

It sounds like maybe Polytopia purposely ruined the ocean game so that people would play a different game?

This feels like if the chess commmunity decided queens were too highly valued and changed the entire rules and game dynamic to open up the play potential. Queens are useless now, enjoy using your pawns!

I'm not too sure how detaching Custom Houses from being strictly Port-related is "ruining the ocean game".

Wish this option was available too, especially since there's no undo button and scouting is pointless most of the time

Those were true before the update, too.

So much new stuff. I’m missing my old approach to economy, I feel directionless

It's why we had a longer-than-usual beta period and a ton of blog posts. We knew that changing naval was going to be a big update, so we took steps to ease people into it.

That being said, how can we help give you some direction? What would you like to discuss?

Scouts are designed to beat Bombers. Are you able to get any out?

I never play multi-player, this is a comfort game I play trying to get 3 stars on domination with whatever random map I get (always hoping for coastal), usually when I need to destress. Isn't there some way you could make a classic version available for the AI games? I don't think this game feels very playable anymore and I really wish I wouldn't have updated it.

Well, the new Continents ane Pangea maps actually prioritize giving you Coastal terrain.

We do know that the new Continents is a little wonky and we're working on getting it ironed out.

What makes the game unplayable?

Biggest issue? Taking fortify away from Swordsman without anything to balance this out. You have destroyed any reason to play as Vengir now, which were my favorite tribe.

Better ideas: buff Defenders with either better defense bonus in cities and/or higher defense attribute, and/or higher hit points.

Vengir should have been given compensation for this. They already had their economy nerfed to compensate for starting with Swordsman, which I agree with. Now they lost something and gained nothing in return.

You didn't kill the game, you just killed Vengir and Swordsmen.

We are aware of Swordsmen and Vengir, and I wouldn't be surprised if more changes for both come down the pipe.

Not yet, but we plan to rework them in the near future.

Sadly, the Navalon had to go.

But it gives us room to add new things in the future. :)
