This thread is for recording known fixes for this game. It is NOT a general support thread.

If you have any problem not covered here please make a new thread of your own in this forum (rather than a me-too post in someone else's thread), and provide a full problem description and history there. Thank you.

That is unfortunate, as overheating is usually fairly easy to fix. We don't really have any clue left why this is affecting you now.

What fps do you see in the game?

Rezimodos said: I have the same problem as you. every 10-20 minutes the game stops responding, but after 5 minutes I can continue the game.

Win 10, GTX 950, 16 GB Ram, Game installed on SSD HD. Everything is updated.
You can see all the things we've looked at and tried in this thread, and all the info we've asked for ... please go through all that. Thanks.

Ailis7 said: The problem is reproduced when loading the game, no matter where, even during the game, if loaded from the place where you are currently playing - crash to the desktop.
Can you clarify this please? Do you mean this only happens when you load a saved game while you are in a game? Not from the main menu?

The Turk2 said: Each of my cores has hit a max of around 85C. Which I've seen you say elsewhere is problematic. Is this normal for paradox games? Is there a way to stop the game from freezing?
That may be due to a bug in the game, yes. What fps do you see, anything excessive like over 200? See if you can use Catalyst to cap the fps to say 60.

Otherwise it can be a real hardware cooling issue, which you might also be seeing in MacOS then. What sort of temps do you see there? I use Macs Fan Control to see that.

[13:12:40][virtualfilesystem_physfs.cpp:1539]: Could not open file: pdx_settings.txt, error: pdx_settings.txt permission denied
What antivirus app do you use?
Add CK3.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.

You may also need to add steam.exe and C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2.2020.12/paradox launcher.exe to that list.

The Turk2 said: Where do you see that I need to update my driver? I thought I already did, as you recommended above?
The one you have is November 2019, I thought they had 2020 ones available for this now?

I don't know why Speedfan is not finding your GPU, it should be listed with the cores there. I guess try some other apps like GPU-Z or Speccy.

Please update that AMD video driver, it's 5 years old. The May 2020 one from here is good:

All the best!

Actually 80c is where the computer will start to throttle its own speed to prevent hardware damage. I suspect that is in fact your problem.

Clean out all air vents it has (compressed air cans are good for this). Make sure airflow to them is not blocked by anything like walls, books or whatever.
If that doesn't drop the temps enough, you probably have a faulty fan or a heatsink/thermal paste problem. You may need professional help at that point.

[14:48:23][dlc.cpp:1889]: Incorrect MOD descriptor: "mod/ugc_2217534250.mod"
While a mod shouldn't cause this, do you also see it in a campaign where no mods has ever been used?

And, is anything in this machine overclocked?

No, sorry, forget that part.

hen2001 said: Am having similar issues, have allowed full disk access to launcher on Mac, but still not working
Is your MacOS User Documents folder on your local disk, or has iCloud grabbed it? If the latter, that's a problem with the launcher at the moment - can you move it back?

If that's not the issue, then it's probably a file access/permissions issue in MacOS. Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy. Then select the Privacy tab. Scroll down to files and folder in the left column. You’ll see a list of apps and the folders they need access to. Check the box to give access.

Is it possible to test it with the game on C: ? I do recall some issues with I think Stellaris if the documents and cache were on a different drive to the game itself.

Also if you exit the Steam app entirely and run ck3.exe directly - any faster?

Has the game ever worked? Or never yet?

DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7 or later). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/CK3/pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox/CK3/logs/ folder, attach system.log , error.log

Those CPU temps are okay but what do you see for the GPU? That's much more likely to be a temp problem.

You should update that AMD driver to the latest one from here:

It is extremely bad I have to agree! There must be somethign different on this computer that triggers this behaviour by the game, but I'm just not seeing it.

Pretty much every other case I've seen has been connected with doing autosaves.

I would suggest it be on C: though, if as I think D: is an external drive. That really makes no difference at all?

What CPU and GPU temperatures do you see in the main game menu, then when this problem starts happening?

Are you having any other issues with this machine?

Is the game installed on C: or some other drive?

That aside I don't see what in that machine could be causing this for you!
