Right click on ck3.exe , properties, compatibility. Tick "disable fullScreen optimisations" untick every other box in that dialog, Apply and exit.
Then in the launcher Game Settings menu, select fullScreen display mode, Vsync off, cap refresh rate at 60.

If those don't help:
DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Anything else I can try?
In your dxdiag.txt we see one AppHang on ck3.exe but no crashes. Which tends to point to somethign outside the game.

Make a new Windows user and log in as that. In there go into the Startup settings and disable everything you can, then reboot and log in as that n... Read more

version=0
value="off"

Did you set the framerate cap to 60? What fps do you see in the game?

With 8gb of system memory, you may be swapping items out to dis which slows things down. Make sure you unload every other app you can AND unload GeForce Experience before starting the game.

We see a mod error in that log. Please only test with campaigns that have never had any mods used in them, which we work on this here.

Has this always been the case with this game? Or it was okay for you up to some point?

Those settings should have taken effect as I described, not sure what is going on there.

What fps do you see in the game just before it crashes? Anything over 60?

From what you say this is either a game bug, or your machine is filling up memory and swap file with other stuff. If you increase that swap file to say 16gb as a test, does that help?

If not I suspect this is a game bug, perhaps confined to Linux, so would need to be reported in the Bug Reports forum.

Sounds like a Tech Support issue.

So hang loose while I move you over there.

It is a big issue to solve as it is in the underlying game engine, not the games as such. So a different development team.

However 8 cores ought to be plenty for these games (indeed any game) - there are very few apps of any sort that can usefully use more than about 4 cores at once! Only really CPU-intensive apps like say Photoshop or CAD/CAM systems really. So I can't account for these games now being slower; I guess unload every other app you can before starting the games.

I'm afraid this is very likely to be another case of the suspected game engine bug as I describe here

There's no crash recorded in that dxdiag, in this game or any app on your system in fact! Quite unusual.

Has this problem always happened on this computer? Or it was okay up to some point?

May as well update that nVidia driver to this month's one:

I'm not sure those errors are anything to do with your crash.

The symptoms you report are generally driver, Windows or most commonly hardware issues.

For the latter my suspicion would fall on the AMD video system, as we seem to have ruled out overheating of that. Do you have the option of swapping that out, even temporarily, as a test?

And, what temperatures do you see elsewhere in the system - CPU and PSU in particular?

Refunds can only come from the store you bought from.

I know the game still has this issue; I do regularly update the developers about it, but being a probable engine issue it will take considerable time to fix, I am sorry.

My question was whether setting Affinity in steam.exe meant you didn't have to set it on ck3.exe every time you played? doing taht should not have any noticeable effect on any game's performance - 12 cores are plenty for any game!

IF that doesn't help, in this folder are some .log files:
C:/users/{userName}/AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
Please attach them here.
To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer.

Note that you can run ck3.exe directly from File Explorer, which bypasses the launcher.

This issue is irrelevant of OS, I think you are looking at the wrong issue - there is a separate CK3 one with the Gamepass edition relating to corrupted save game files in the MS cloud.

My suggestion was to use Affinity in Windows to restrict ck3.exe (and indeed victoria3.exe) to use the first 16 core/CPUs - using only one will indeed cripple the performance as no multi-threading would be possible.

Please try this:

- uninstall Paradox Launcher v2 from the Windows "Apps and features" utility, if still present.

Delete the following folders if still present:

- C:/users/{userName}/AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users/{userName}/AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users/{userName}/AppData/Roaming/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer.

- exit the Steam app entirely
- run steam.exe as the Windows Admin user
- run the game from the PLAY button in Steam
OR
- exit the Epic app entirely
- run EpicGamesLauncher.exe as the Windows Admin user
- run the game from the Epic client

IF that doesn't help, in this folder are some .log files:
