That's my assumption too. Look back some cards have the extra bit, some don't. I'm guessing blizzard add it whenever they can, and ignore it otherwise.

whenever we make multiple cards that generate tokens with pretty unique/long effects, we try to have at least 1 card whose focus is explaining the mechanic rather than doing something more complex/unique with it. in this case, Explodineer is a simpler design that explains the entire thing, letting us do a bit more with Safety Expert's design!

some other examples:

  • In Nathria, we made Volatile Skeleton a collectible card. because it's collectible (and common, so its more likely for players to own it), it's more likely for players to be able to search for it, and therefore know what they are in the context of cards like Cold Case!

  • Remember Tamsin's hero card from AV? neither she nor her hero power say what a "Rift" is... but Seeds of Destruction does! Tamsin and her Hero Power have a lot more going on than just shuffling rifts, but Seeds of Destruction's entire effect is JUST shuffling, leaving plenty of room to explain.

Dr. Boom’s been tinkering away in the basement of Whizbang’s Workshop, working on his own line of toys to prove that he is the greatest toymaker and inventor in Azeroth. He’s come up with something huge—gigantic, even—and he’s ready to share it with the world. Prepare to have your mind blown, these are Dr. Boom’s Incredible Inventions!

Dr. Boom’s Incredible Inventions, launching on May 14, consists of 38 new cards: 4 Legendary cards, 1 Epic card, 17 Rare cards, and 16 Common cards. Those cards can either be opened in Whizbang’s Workshop packs or purchased as a completed 72-card set.* Normal versions of the Mini-Set can be purchased for $14.99 or 2000 Gold. The all-Golden version of the Mini-Set can be purchased for $69.99 or 10,000 Gold, and includes a bonus Diamond Legendary card!

* Includes one copy of each Legendary card and two copies of each other card in the Mini-Set.

Patch 29.2.3 is a server-side patch, rolling out now with the following updates:

Battlegrounds Updates

  • Heroes now have a Duos Armor level, distinct from their Solo Battlegrounds Armor levels. For most Heroes, their Duos Armor level is 2-3 Armor lower than their (higher ranks) Solo Battlegrounds Armor level.
  • Duos turns from turn 7 onwards are now slightly longer than before.
  • Mechs will be reactivated in Battlegrounds after this patch has rolled out.

Bug Fixes

  • [Hearthstone] Fixed a bug where Alexstrasza’s Battlecry effect didn’t work properly with life-total adjusting effects (like Azerite Snake and Vampiric Blood).

  • [Battlegrounds] Fixed a bug where Golden Scrap Scraper didn’t function properly.

  • [Battlegrounds] Fixed a bug where Utility Drone didn’t function properly.

  • [Battlegrounds] Fixed a bug where Persistent Poet didn’t functi...

Patch 29.2.2, launching later today, contains big updates to Hearthstone and Battlegrounds.

Hearthstone Updates

Dev Comment: This patch is a little different than our usual balance patches—it’s more about the general design direction of the game than it is about particular power outliers (though we hit a few of those, too). Right now, there are a lot of cards that can remove player agency and raise the power level of the game beyond where we want for a 4-set meta. We’re looking at a variety of these meta-defining cards in this patch, from OTK-style cards to powerful AoE effects that make it feel like your minions don’t matter.

There will always be cool, dreamy cards in Hearthstone—that's part of what makes Hearthstone Hearthstone—but these types of cards can sometimes be disproportionately more fun to play with than play against. We don’t want these kinds of cards to make up the most powerful and prevalent archetypes in the game, especially i...

The following is being posted on behalf of Aleco Pors, Final Design Lead.

Hey everyone!

We’ve got a really big balance patch planned for later this week, with changes to around 30 cards, including buffs and nerfs—and a few Wild changes. Since this patch has different goals from most other patches, I’d like to provide you all with some more context as to what we’re thinking and how we got here.

In this patch, we are attempting to address issues which have cropped up with the overall health of Standard, as opposed to correcting issues with the health of the specific meta like we normally do. Alarm bells started to go off within the design team when we noticed that the power level of Hearthstone didn’t seem to drop much (if at all) after the recent annual rotation. This sparked a lot of internal discussion about certain gameplay patterns in the current meta – particularly hyper-efficient AoE board clears, “OTK” style decks that la...
