Thank you for putting so much time and effort into this game, and for not rushing to put updates out when you have irl stuff going on!

Sorry to hear about your grandfather’s passing. Hope you took/take the time you need. Ardyn’s sound super cool!!

Thank you so much!

Greetings everyone!

I apologize for posting this so late in the month. My grandfather passed away just over a week ago and I had to attend to his funeral. I'm back to work now and I have lots of fun things to show today.

Skill Defaults Window

One thing I've been meaning to add for ages is a window which lets you toggle the default enabled skills per profession and race.

It's pretty straight forward. Within the settlers window, there is a skill defaults sub window (seen above). This window shows all the default skills that are ena...

I love the game, and love this gifs. I can't play much now because of work, but I'm getting nice ideas from this hehe.

This is one of my favorite scenarios. Hope you enjoy next time you play!

Is this a game, if so what? Looks very interesting.

Ya it’s a colony sim game called Odd Realm. You can find it on steam and itch.

How do you make timelapses like this?

I use a combination of OBS and ffmpeg. I record about 10 minutes of footage in OBS. Then, using ffmpeg, I crop, remove audio, and sample every 10th frame. The spits out the final timelapse video. The great thing is these are all free tools and the process is quick.

I haven’t played this in a while - are you able to just stick the sides of the bridge across without supports, or is there owning going on at lower z-levels?

Right now there is no physics sim for building and mining. I do plan on adding that stuff (with the option of disabling it). So, yes, you can build across the river without worrying about it collapsing without some supports.

Oh wow! That is a lot of issues. But I have to say, all of the re-writing that you did really worked out. You made the game super satisfying and interesting! I never thought that there would be so many bugs underneath the surface.

Thanks! Glad you are enjoying it. Still a lot to add, so it's promising that you find the fun before it's done. :)

Well, on the surface, the AI doesn't seem too impressive. The entities aren't writing plays (yet!) or anything. However, the job system and entity state machine was extremely challenging to write. I've had to re-write it several times over the last five years of development. The problem was that I learned a lot as I went (which meant I wanted to throw out garbage code I had written previously) and that the game got more complicated over time. It's super difficult to write something that can catch every edge case. That said, it's finally in a place that feels comfortable to work on and expand upon. Entities still have little behavior issues but it's much easier to address them now.

As for specific challenges, there are so many...

Writing a job system that could assign entities jobs based on priority was interesting. You have a lot of things to factor in for just assigning them a job. Then, what happens when something goes wrong. i.e., The entity dies, or the items i...
