If it's taking an hour then you might also only have 8GB of RAM. Using an SSD and 16GB or more of RAM is strongly recommended.

Your antivirus is blocking some of the files. This is currently known to happen with RAV and Bullguard antiviruses. Either remove them from your PC or exclude scanning on the Rust folder, and then verify your files in Steam.

That's why - Bullguard and RAV antivirus have been causing this issue lately. You should be able to disable it for the Rust folder and verify files in Steam to fix it.

Assuming you're using Windows: open Task Manager, click "More details" on the bottom, switch to the Performance tab on the top, then on the left you see "Memory". Mine says "14.3/31.7 GB (45%)", what does yours say?

How much RAM does your PC have?

Try setting your launch options for Rust in Steam to: +warmupConcurrency 256 +preloadConcurrency 256

Next patch would expose this in the options menu as 'Optimized Loading' under the experimental category.

You don't have enough RAM to have both Rust and a server open at the same time.

It probably said "ban evasion" which means they think you were banned on another account and are using a different account to get around that ban.

It's a server ban so you are only banned from that server. You could play on a different one if you can't get through to the server owners.

You will need to contact the person who owns that server to get them to let you back in.

Check "Windows Security" on your PC because you most certainly have something.

Setting your launch options to this should have a benefit when running on the SSD: +asyncWarmup true +warmupConcurrency 64 +preloadConcurrency 128 +forceUnloadBundles false

Do test again after a restart. Your OS will cache recently accessed files in RAM which can speed up loading because it doesn't need to touch the HDD as much.

Rust is only 20GB - pretty small by today's standards. If you play it often then just put it onto your SSD. Steam even makes it easy to move games between drives.

Check your HDD utilization in Task Manager while loading instead of CPU utilization. I expect it to be pegged at 100% because loading is being bottlenecked by your HDD. There's no way to make your HDD load things faster.

You can try enabling the experimental async loading code we have but I have no idea what difference it'll make in this case. Set your launch options for Rust to: +asyncWarmup true +warmupConcurrency 64 +preloadConcurrency 128 +forceUnloadBundles false

Please let me know if you run into any issues when using these launch options.

Is Steam still running on your PC when the game is frozen? Or has it closed itself?

Did they measure it? There should be very little impact to single thread performance, if there is any at all. It's more likely placebo or some other changes they made, or they have a CPU with like 1 core/2 threads (which is going to suck no matter what).

Your OS is smart enough to schedule things on separate physical cores so it only uses the hyperthreaded cores if you need a boost in multithreading. I wouldn't disable hyperthreading unless you actually want to benchmark everything properly to make sure it is worth it.

16 GB or more of RAM
CPU with good single thread performance
OS+Rust on an SSD
