This is what I'm planning for this patch, we'll see how it goes. I hope we don't need to block all the features of AHK.

We're not interested in your browsing habits.

It's important to know though that almost every program on your computer can record your input or read your open webpages. This is because it doesn't take any special permissions to do so (not even admin access in many cases).

If this is something that you're worried about I recommend being extra careful about the software you install.

That's awesome! That was a neat read. The pragmatic approach is always good, so many people throw out the whole thing because it's not perfect. But I assume cheats are similar to attackers, it's all about increasing that barrier to entry and making it harder and harder until it's not worth it except to all but the most dedicated, and then you build detections around their behaviors. I think I have more questions now than I did before. Really cool, keep up the good work!

Thanks!

It's exactly like you say, very similar to threat modeling in infosec :)

We see a lot of push into analytics (think posturing and profiling) and outlier detection in my space, is it going the same way with games? Can you flag on increasingly risky behavior and then pop a manual review task? It's kind of a cool intersect of worlds/techniques.

Sometimes! Recently I wrote an article about the Fog of War system which is less about security and more just software engineering: https://technology.riotgames.com/news/demolishing-wallhacks-valorants-fog-war

Hopefully we'll have more talks about the data analytics side of anti-cheat in the coming year.

So far we're happy with the performance of Vanguard

Hi, will we ever know that a person we reported was banned? I dont even mean cheating, because so far, Ive seen a lot of shady things going on on the server, but nothing 100% sure it was a cheat, but Ive seen a lot of insults, hate speech etc...I´ve reported them all, but I feel like they all go to an empty no return cloud. I dont know if you think that way, but when a player reports someone for any valid reason and gets feedback from that report saying that actions were taken, it give us a sense of security in game, and a job well done, and other games have that, like cs:go. Is that a thing to come in Valorant?

I'd like us to have a report feedback system so that you can know that your reports led to action. Not sure when we'll get to build it though.

If the game's not running you won't get banned for anything. The part that runs at boot doesn't store anything or report back to our servers so we have no ability to detect any cheats if you're not playing.

We're not going to mass ban AHK users.

No bans for AHK unless we detect that they're using blatantly cheaty scripts (e.g. pixelbot or recoil helpers).

If we decided that AHK had to stop completely we would try to prevent AHK from working with the game and then warn people that circumventing the protection would mean a ban.

For now I'm working on making AHK a less good tool for cheating without stopping it outright.

I'm willing to take more steps in the future if this first approach doesn't get it done.

I have something coming for this in the next patch, it won't be a perfect solution but it'll be a start.

I can't tell you for your specific case but sometimes a detection method has false positives. The most common source of false positives are cheats from other games (which we generally don't want to ban for) but sometimes we make mistakes.

Usually if we make mistakes or deploy a too aggressive detection we try to fix accounts immediately without waiting for the player to submit a ticket but there's a chance that something goes wrong with that process.

If you think you've been banned falsely I recommend another support ticket, usually a second support ticket isn't helpful but during this beta when we're still figuring out our processes and procedures sometimes tickets get answered incorrectly.

I recommend talking to Player Support they might be able to help you out!

Thanks for the update, sorry we couldn't get you unstuck sooner!

We're trying to make this process less opaque (and annoying) for players, expect some improvements in our next patch.

If you submit a support ticket we'll review it! Please be patient though our support team is getting a lot of requests right now.

We're going to add better ways to control when Vanguard is running on your computer hopefully and we're also trying to be more transparent about what specific components Vanguard disagrees with to make it easier to troubleshoot.

No firm ETA but we're aiming for sometime before the next VALORANT patch.

You should be able to run the latest versions of the software I mentioned above, I mention them just because an old version came with a driver that has a privilege escalation vulnerability. The latest versions have discontinued that driver.

We don't specifically have anything against fan management drivers (or any other type of drivers) so hopefully the latest drivers for your GPU and motherboard should work fine with Vanguard.

As i mentioned, it was working yesterday, but after today's patch it broke again.

I can try and update for the latest version, if you give me the go.

I tried the same version and I saw an error the first time I started a VM but then the second time I tried it worked. I'll keep looking into it though.

/u/xXdimmitsarasXx we expect VMWare to be working on the host machines that have Vanguard installed.

If it's not working for you can you let me know your VMWare version?

It's possible that there's a version specific thing we can look at.

On it, thanks for the report.

Sending this stuff to player support will mean that someone will look at it even if I'm not reading reddit :)

In all srs tho awesome thank you a ton, the game is awesome so far and Its absurdly good for beta. Any suggestions in the meantime you might have to work around this kinda issue?

If there's a performance issue it'll be on our side and we'll need to fix it.

The best work around would be to uninstall Riot Vanguard (from Add/Remove programs). You won't be able to play Valorant until it's reinstalled (the game launcher will do it) but it will mean that there's no chance of a Vanguard bug impacting anything on your system.

Please help, everything ran smoothly today until my internet cut out. then after that it kept saying I had to reboot my PC in order to install Vanguard. Even though I have it! I tried reinstalling it too and rebooted my PC 10 times but nothing works. I'm not a big computer guy, all I know is how to play games. I love riot and their games but this whole anti-cheat is a bit over the top. I understand that you want the best anti-cheats but to the avg consumer it just becomes too much work. I would still like some help though!

Sorry to hear about your issues!

Some other software that sometimes causes problems are:

  • Comodo Internet Security Essentials
  • AMD Graphics Driver Pixel Clock Patcher
  • Aomei Backupper

It's not a complete list but there are some more. If this doesn't help I recommend a support ticket, they'll be able to look at your logs and figure out more specifically what's going on.
