But a stability problem in the game would be a bug ... ?!? Unless you feel it is something in your own environment doing it?

It is a folder used by the Windows installer app msiexec.exe for temporary installation files. I've recommended many people delete its contents (NOT the folder itself) with no repercussions.

But is it there, did you find it?

I moved your previous thread to MP because I don't have anything to suggest here, sorry.

But if you believe it to be a game bug, then the Bug Reports forum is the place to post that.

I'm not across bug reports for this game, but my impression it is is a very sporadic issue and the devs have not been able to reproduce it. So the short answer is that (so far as I know) we don't know why it happens!

If you are using any mods, try without I guess.

Try deleting the entire contacts of that C:\windows\installer\ folder ; not the folder itself, just its contents. They are all temporary files.

To see that folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer.

If it is not there however, try creating it manually.

I don't think I'll be able to help with this, but I believe there have been other such reports occasionally. So far as I recall the only way to rescue that save it to manually edit the save game file to make the empire visible again.

You might check the MP and Bug Report forums for other such reports.

Sorry to not be able to help you much on this occasion!

I see, I don't have a good explanation why this is happening to you then.

Do you have any over clocking enabled on this machine? If so try undoing that please.

If that doesn't help, install and run the free utility Speccy. Send its output to a text file and attach that here please.

This game is no longer supported on the standalone Paradox launcher platform. But even if it was, that would not fix your crashing problem, as the game is essentially identical on all platforms.

If you can fill out your situation we'll try to help you with the crashes.

This game does not need any compatibility settings set, it's developed and tested on native Windows 10 and 11.

You mention working on your AV app has helped in the past. Which one do you use? It is possible that every time a new game patch comes out, its new eu4.exe will need to be added to the AV app's exceptions lists.

IF that doesn't help:
DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach here your Documents/Paradox Interactive/EU4/settings.txt and pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/EU4/logs/ folder, attach here system.log , error.log , exceptions.log

boring_eratosthenes said: I went and gave that a try. I disabled the discord overlay and made sure I didn't have my browser open. It lasted longer than before but it did eventually close out. The saving isn't the issue so I didn't mess with last_save (I lose so little with that it doesn't matter to me)
Did you reinstate those settings from post #2?

You may have a Steam problem there. Please do a full **clean** re-install of Steam and game:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-CK3
- exit the Steam app completely
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/CK3 AND Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3 folders
- delete everything in the Steam folder EXCEPT steam.exe and the SteamApps folder
- run steam.exe to rebuild all that
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add CK3.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
- start the game with no mods active and test

Good luck!

sweet_relish said: I have this same problem. As soon as I press continue and a day is over, the game crashes with a new 867 start.

Discord is off.
Always best to start your own thread - same symptom does not necessarily mean the same case.

Did you go through everything I've suggested in this thread? You don't say either way.

Unfortunately we cannot help with modded games here. Can you start a new unmodded colony and see if it has the same problem?

If you run eu4.exe directly from File Explorer, does it start up then? If not is any Windows error shown?

To find the installation folder for any Steam game, right click on it in your Steam Library, Manage, Browse Local files.

Then, in this game's case, you go into the Binaries folder.

You may find the Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/last_save.ck3 file preserves your campaign better.

After one of these crashes, can you reload the game and save game and carry on? Or do you need to reboot or wait a while before it will run again?

Please attach here your Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/logs/ folder, attach here system.log , error.log , exceptions.log

Those custom designs are held in user empire designs.txt from /Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/ forum. Does it actually successfully get updated when you do this?

What antivirus app do you use? Make sure stellaris.exe is in all its exceptions lists.

In our launcher, go into the Mods tab and the Playset tab.
