Thanks for writing this up. I'm going to give it a closer read when I get back from my walk.

I guarantee you we’re hearing it. You don’t have to worry about that. I might need to take a break from online for a while because of the sheer amount of hearing it.

How so? We know Hearthstone has the means to bring back cards, and we know it has nothing to do with how long ago the cards rotated out, after all, Darkbishop Benedictus was put in the core set in the same rotation he would've otherwise rotated out, so clearly the selection to bring back has nothing to do with age. So what would make a difference here?

Way I see it HS didnt rotate cards back in basically ever for the same reason we dont have permanent Eternal ranked, it would defeat the point of rotation.

There are always going to be examples of exceptions based on various factors. Finding an example of an exception because of some other factors outweighing the normal pattern does not mean it suddenly isn’t a factor at all.

This is actually one reason many game devs are reluctant to discuss design decisions with players, because they can never give a comprehensive guide to every scenario and every situation - which some people use to show a seeming “contradiction” in their logic - then imply this means the devs are either incompetent or dishonest.

... again, youre talking about cards rotating out, Im talking about bringing cards back. How cards rotate out has little bearing on how theyre brought back.

As a guy who’s worked on both games, I can tell you it has immense bearing on how they’re brought back.

Uh, how does that affect cards coming back? Hearthstone didnt bring cards back based on time either (some where old, some were quite new), and the cards that came back came back with the yearly change in core set. The way cards would come back, and their timing, is the same, hence the comparison.

Unless Im misremembering you did cite it as an inspiration, ontop of the thing youre referring to.

When you rotate by date of release by default, it’s different than when you hand select everything.

If you’re solely talking about the classic set getting revamped over time because it doesn’t rotate by default, that’s different. The vast majority of hearthstone cards released rotate automatically after a cerise amount of time after their release date.

The same was said for Hearthstone, which the devs (for some reason) cited as an inspiration, the amount of cards that came back is very low and basically none of them mattered once they came back. Dont expect more here.

Hearthstone has rotation by date of release. LoR explicitly doesn’t.

Sidenote: when was hearthstone cited as inspiration? Are you thinking of the time a former hearthstone player tried to compare the two and I responded to them?

Thoroughly enjoying the new expansion, and excited for all rotation has to bring. Thought I'd chime in with some positivity to show my appreciation for this wonderful game and the team that built it 😁

Glad to hear it. I'm glad folks are passionate about the game and I'm glad people care as much as they do. I want to keep pushing for experiments and being willing to try stuff out, get community feedback, and iterate.

Yeah, it's something we're going to change. We wanted to get standard-legal starting decks in right away but there were last-minute complications that we didn't expect. It turns out that anything tied to the tutorials and new player experience isn't easy to change quickly, it has a lot of moving parts. For example, different folks currently handle the event passes and similar than handle the gameplay events and other people handle major new features.

Most stuff we make only falls within one group's area of expertise - but for the new player experience mixing with rotation all three are incredibly deeply connected. The reward track for new players (the prologue road) that unlocks new decks is something that the folks that handle event passes and quests need to manage, and it turned out that the prologue road is not easy to change or get new art assets for. Gameplay of course needs to build the decks accounting for rotation. Features handles the other aspects...

It’s supposed to be unlocked right now. In you’re on EU there have been some launch issues. Either way good to file a bug.

Yeah, I am doomposting. I respect that rotation is necessary for any card game, but I don't like that a lot of the champs I love will be headed to what I believe will be an unbalanced mess as many "Wild" formats become. A lot of what made this game special for me is the connection to the champions. Decks are about them. Entire lore is constructed in this game around them. And now they're going to a place that feels like it just won't matter. It also disincentivizes me from buying cosmetics: I don't want to buy a skin for a champ who I can only play in a format that matters once every few months. And since it's not clear who will be rotating or if they'll ever come back, the only safe move for me is to not buy cosmetics for anyone. Can't get burned like I did buying my Santa Braum skin.

I understand the team isn't letting the game fade away completely, but for me, a player who rea...

Thanks for listening, I do appreciate your willingness to engage with folks, even when they're unproductively doommeming.

I'm glad to hear it.

I think it's fair feedback to say, "why would the team say they're refocusing on PVP, incite panic about the future of Path, then continue to regularly update Path?" I'm not upset about Path being updated. But I also don't see the point of that "Refocusing" post at all now, ~six months later.

This I gotta disagree with. The vast majority of team resources are focused on PvP. Like 90% or more. It's not our fault that we've done a lot of cool stuff with the last 10%. :)

Kinda wish wed had more notice on the official list but i trust you guys had good reasons to pick the cards you did

(However damn you and your team for taking Zilean AND Shelfolk away from me)

I appreciate it, thanks. :)

Heh, yeah. People were shouting Path was a dead mode too last year. Those people have gotten way quieter these days.

It's a bit weird weird you included path updates and rotation as part of the doomposting though. It would have been way easier for us to not do path updates and not build rotation if we just planned to let the game fade away. Rotation, Monthly Challenge, Competitive Revamp, these are things that only make sense to do if you want to support the game over the long term.

After all, rotation is controversial with players and a lot of up-front work to set up - it's worth it only because it's good for the game in the long term as the total cards in game continues to expand, if we just wanted to ride off into the sunset it would have been way easier to... Not do that.

When Path players were doomposting about path, I said at the time "I look forward to proving you wrong", and meant it. Looking forward to proving you wrong too. Your ac...
