Hello everyone!

Thank you for joining our free event last week. It was wonderful to see so many of you – we had record numbers of people online playing Barotrauma!

This week, it’s time to look at some more upcoming content additions. Read more on our blog[barotraumagame.com], and let us know what you think about…

Endworm and Charybdis The time has finally come to reintroduce two of the most sorely missed deep sea creatures that were in the game as placeholders in our earlier days in development.

Hey-hey, let's not call anyone names or jump to any conclusions :)

To answer OP's question: no, sadly, this is not an option. I am not even entirely sure whether that's a developer/publisher/platform question, either – so I am also somewhat doubtful regarding our future plans for this sort of deal. Sorry that I can't be of more help! For what it's worth, I would like to second what Shiro says: You do not necessarily need to enter this game with friends, as we have friendly people around. If you're interested in taking a closer look at that playerbase to inform your decision, please feel free to stop by our official Discord: discord.gg/undertow

Both wikis are made by fans, and both were to a degree facilitated by us; the new one on barotraumagame.com is also owned by us, so it gets less ads and sadly also less search engine love. But we try :)

We're currently working on ways of improving the experience a new player has when trying to get into the game, but you're right that Barotrauma has a lot of moving parts and we've got out work cut out for us in that department. If you have the time and energy to join in editing the wiki, you are very welcome! In any event, we're hoping to make information more easily findable, in the game and outside it.

Hello everyone!

We are very excited to throw our first-ever play for free event. This is something we’ve seen a lot of interest in, so we hope many of those potential future Barotraumites who have been waiting for this opportunity notice: now and for the next 48 hours, you can download and play Barotrauma for free.

Together with the free event, we’ve also secured a discount period – for our deepest discount yet. That’s to say, if you want to keep playing Barotrauma following your free trial, you can now get it for 55% off.

Without further ado, welcome to Europa! We hope you enjoy your stay.

P.S. Curious to see what you can look forward to with our game? Take a look at this feature ... Read more

Hi! The shrinking of the map is indeed optional, and as we are still firmly in early access, everything in the game is still subject to change – so while it is not being initially released as gradeable and we do not at present have plans for making it so, your feedback, once you get to play the feature in practice, will be very welcome as always!

From our side of things, the apprehension surrounding the topic seems somewhat surprising, even though we knew it was coming... so we urge you to try it and see for yourself, because we don't think it's actually that harsh :) but as it became apparent not everyone was feeling excited about this in any good way, we decided it should be optional from the start. We don't like telling our players exactly how you should play!

Hi! Sorry for the delay, but here's what I got from my colleagues:

"This is most likely caused by the lighting: when a light source is moving relative to a sub, it needs to constantly recalculate the shadows cast by the things the light hits. Because of that, subs/shuttles with lots of external light sources can cause a large performance hit"

Do you think that would explain what you're experiencing?

Hello everyone!

The next major update is getting closer, and it’s time to introduce some more new features that are coming. Take a look on our blog[barotraumagame.com] for some more details about the…

Shrinking campaign map As the radiation from outside Europa’s icy crust reaches ever deeper into the ocean where we all sail, we must keep moving. The next update will introduce a slowly progressing wall of radiation that destroys everything in its path and pushes the player onwards, into new areas of the map.

While the shrinking map feature will be made optional, we are excited to bring this new expression o... Read more

Hi! Thank you so much, reading this made us very happy. When our publisher suggested a bonus magazine like this, we weren't really sure we knew what we were doing, and the end result was a nice surprise to everyone involved! That's to say, the magazine is made by the same people who make the game: our lead developer, two designers, lead artist and myself handle the bulk of the writing, and the Barotrauma art team is responsible for the visuals, from the illustrations and ads to the layout and graphic design (which we here have been particularly impressed with, too – I don't think we even knew we had a graphic designer in our midst before this!)

The compliments have been relayed to the team :) When we hopefully get around to making the planned third volume, one day, we hope you'll enjoy that one as much as the existing two!

Hi! Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We've heard a few mentions of similar things in the past, but what you're describing sounds like it could be quite serious, so I wanted to let you know we are investigating it. If you have any more details, please don't hesitate to send those over! You can use either public channels, like these forums and our issue tracker[github.com], or if you believe you have some sensitive information on your hands, then it may be good to send that by email, [email protected].

Ahoy!

We’re busy at work on the next major update, and one of the new features it will include is…

Abandoned outposts The world of Barotrauma changes according to what you do or don’t do in it, and a location that is next to monster hunting grounds may become abandoned by its usual inhabitants. Then it will be your job to find and enter the affected outpost and evict whatever has made itself at home inside:
  • Hunt down monsters and destroy their nests, or
  • Deal with squatting outlaws and dispose of their leader, or
  • Deal with outlaws and make sure they don’t come back later – destroy the station reactor for good measure.
  • Get out alive.

What do you think? You can get a more atmospheric glimpse of what’s to come ... Read more

Hi everyone! To clarify, the topic will not be deleted due to us taking offense – you are entirely within your rights to say this. However, according to the numbers we can see, Barotrauma shows no signs of dying, and if you look around these forums for earlier threads on this topic, you may see that they quickly turned less than pretty. For that reason, you are right that we tend not to be too enthusiastic about seeing this brought up here.

So, I wanted to write back as soon as I noticed this topic to encourage everyone to participate and help make this a polite, respectful discussion that stays on topic. Discussions like that are always welcome on our forums, whether we agree with some views that are expressed or not.

Wish you all a good day or night!

Hi everyone, and thanks Pike for sharing the link – we do indeed use that Discord a lot to help players stay up to speed with what we're working on.

Regarding the alien ruins specifically, it's likely but not quite set in stone yet that we'll make an update focused on ruins content later this year. It is, however, not the first order of business, and instead the next major update will have to do with the Abyss and some other improvements to the game world. Hope you'll like it!

Thanks! Yes, I think many EK mods have been updated just recently, so I'd encourage you to try again. If the problem persists, please write here again and we'll take a closer look!

Hi! Sorry for the trouble. We tried and were not able to make this issue happen on our end, so we would need some more information to understand the problem. Are you using a custom submarine? If you are, could you send us a link to it on the Workshop, or the sub file itself?

Another significant group to be sure! But the overwhelming majority of our players are actually from the US, according to Steam data. That may differ wildly from what you see on public servers though, because a lot of people seem to play on closed servers with friends or with established player groups. Our Discord lists some of these player-owned Discords too, if anyone is interested :)
