There are far too many bots and boosters who simply hide in random buildings and try to afk to top 5. It slows down the game’s immensely when people are hiding and you have to essentially find them or wait till they die by fog or finally come running in. Also please remove the ability to go upstairs in the existing map regardless of if your account is in combat or not. There’s literally zero purpose to allowing players to hide.

I'll be sure to keep this in mind! I've always preferred raised areas in PvP minigames to behave like the castle wars walls so you can still see and interact with the other players. It is a shame to lock off access to the upper floors but on the other hand it means I can make use of them as scenery a lot better :D

An easy and funny fix would be to build a pillow into their head models... Tempting.

As the man who painstakingly recreated it tile for tile... Thank you for the compliment! So accurate it looks like a copy paste job is exactly what I was going for :P

This looks incredible! I've not played Minecraft in a few years, can you still do those orthographic 2D renders of the world? I can imagine this would be really interesting to see like that! Glad to see that the height map remains helpful in making such fantastic creations :)

Hi u/Mod_West,

Sorry to bother you, but I'm doing some research for a video project and I'm using this map. I'm wondering how you would interpret the height data. You said that 1 tile is roughly 1 meter, but how tall is 1 height value? I'm thinking of around 10cm, but that would mean that the highest point in the game can only be 25,5 meters, since the value goes from 0 to 255. Can you give me some insight on this?

Thanks, Wout :)

Scale isn't very consistent within OSRS to real life so it's hard to give an exact number. Comparing the height change values to the assets though... roughly 1 tile (meter) is 16 units in the map editor which has a maximum of 255... So the tallest mountain is 16 meters tall? From sea level, not that impressive really.

Hope that helps :D

Incredible work! I love how naturally you've blended the land together to make some logical terrain transitions. I especially like what you've done with Ranul Forest, the concept is incredibly inspiring and super interesting. The balance of population density throughout the land is really great, feels super wild in the center with larger civilizations mostly taking up the edges.

It's scarily close to the rough block-out of Varlamore I was working on a few years ago... Although mine doesn't go quite so far east. I'm certainly a bigger fan of what you've put together! When I say rough block-out - I mean it! It's a collection of various other player made maps spliced together with a few original in-between zones.

Your map will surely go on to influence the future of Varlamore, it would be ridiculous for it not to. The reason I've not worked on that rough block-out for a while now is because we want to move towards the release of Varlamore slowly to allow for time to f...

Ah, I see now why you were interested in the blender height map! This is a fantastic use of it, I especially love how true you've kept the colours and terrain placement. Excited to see more :D

Oh, here's the world map

without icons, were you editing them out?

Or maybe you could set up a stream showing it off.

Haha, doing some map editor livestreaming in my spare time would be quite cool tbh. Could start building fan maps just for fun... hmmm...

I wish we could but they don't work without access to the offices network, which - as you may imagine - we can't give to everyone. Hopefully in the future it becomes possible but I can't see it happening any time soon ):

Indeed! Impressive speed, I must say. That would've taken me a while for sure! Although now that we're all working from home and I have access to the map editor... Hmm...

Pretty sure if it's written there for a year without anyone complaining it's legally binding and not only will you own all custom RuneScape maps, you'll own all the maps in the world.

And if I own all the maps in the worlds... That would make the world mine, correct? The perfect plan for world domination!

Just kiddin, keep up making Zeah awesome.

That's why I made r/OSRSmaps so I had a centralised place for maps to collect so I can steal them when needed :D

Lol, does this not taint your view on how the wilderness works in regards to multi-combat, timers, or things like that? I never really got bothered thaaaat much until I started an Ironman and had to consider the zero-benefit game of fighting back and assessment of how protected items are based on GE Values which don’t matter to Ironmen and things like that.

I suppose. The wilderness wasn't really made for ironman play though, so there are bound to be some issues.

I also love how the new area incorporates more impassable terrain- things like steep slopes or walls have always done a huge role in shaping areas. How a player navigates an area sticks with that place's identity, and old Zeah pretty much never had that. Old Zeah felt kind of like one big fair, with tents/ buildings in a huge grid for you to walk up and play little games at.

I made this god knows how long ago, to try and visually explain what more natural pathing, smaller buildings, and impassible terrain could do to an area to make it feel so much more real. Your reworks take this approach intuitively, and it makes me happy for the future of this game's map design :D

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was thinking. There's a forest near where I grew up called Thetford Forest and I'd love to create something reminiscent of this style (obviously with much smaller trees due to our limitations) with large sections of red-brown ferns amongst the trees. Now, this is quite at odds with the Persian-esuqe aesthetic of current Shayzien but I've always felt that a harsh mixing of styles makes things feel unique and fantastical. Unsure if you've ever read the WoT (I'm halfway through it myself... it's long) but there's a civilization known as the 'Aiel' (Eye-eel, or something like that) and they're a very strange mixture of real world cultures that makes them very unique and grounded as a result. I think if we reduced some of the vibrancy from the Shayzien red to a more maroon/brown it could sensibly be used as camo in a forest with a littering of brown ferns and bright red berry bushes.

Yeah, the original layout of Zeah was very theme-parky. It was c...

Yeah, one time. Was quite disappointed in myself, ngl. Only lost a dds and an rcb though, not the end of the world.

I can't even loot anyway - you see, I'm an ironman. I may not have mentioned :P
