It happens occationally when the files that store the information of what's enabled get corrupted and/or deleted. That's something that seems to happen occationally when having high memory usage and quitting the game. The file gets saved at that point, but it doesn't save correctly, so it's at 0kb, which makes the operating system delete it.

The Instant Return to Desktop mod seems to help avoid it, as it changes how the game shuts down.

Are you using any mods or map themes from the workshop?

Hi and welcome! :D

Your traffic actually looks pretty good. 89% traffic flow and no areas that light up badly with red. It's okay for some intersections to be busy as long as traffic doesn't get "stuck" there too long.

To back up your saves just make a copy of the files and keep them somewhere. The save files are found here: C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Colossal Order\Cities_Skylines\Saves

As for mods, you can also copy all the mods and assets from the workshop folder, but those subscriptions are tied to your Steam account, so if you log in with the same account on another computer, it will download those files. Then you just need to enable everything.

Workshop content is stored here, though the path may vary a little depending on where your Steam is installed.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\255710

Sounds like the European Style got disabled along with everything else and just needs to be enabled again. :)

Make sure you have Prop Snapping subscribed and enabled if you want to raise or lower props with Move It. :)

You will want to set up a custom pagefile for Windows. I recommend setting it to 32 GB. This guide explains how to do that. :)

If you play on a winter map, you also have a different selection that's more appropriate for a winter map.

I really recommend posting screenshots and/or your city whenever you have a specific situation that isn't working like you want it to. I'm not really great a public transport myself, but we have some really great players who are super helpful in improving transport networks and figuring out why something doesn't work.

I'll link a few video tutorials about public transport, which I've found super helpful in building better cities.

The wast majority of assets are just fine and never need to be updated, so it's highly unlikely your problems are related to assets. It'a almost always mods that act up, because they change how the game behaves and so need updated when the code they affect has changed.

Missing assets shown when you load your game (when using the Loading Screen Mod) isn't actually something you need to worry about. Most of those (if not all) are just props or trees that were used to decorate buildings. If you want them, the Loading Screen Mod makes a handy list with links, but the buildings work perfectly fine without. And sometimes it's actually a good idea to not get props or trees to save memory.

The only ones you really need to deal with are assets listed as Broken by the Loading Screen Mod. Again you can use the report the mod generates to figure out what's wrong. To find it, go to Options, find the Loading Screen Mod on the left, then enable the report and copy or change th... Read more

Definitely define a pagefile size. I recommend 32 GB. It's pretty easy to do, so it's worth excluding memory usage early on.

Next I'd check temperatures to make sure everything is fine.

If that isn't it, test the game without workshop content by adding the launch option -noWorkshop and -disableMods, and starting a new city to test. You can also use a full vanilla city to test, so you don't need to build anything. I use this one a bunch:

Does it also happen then? Or is it working just fine?

That's definitely the toolbar mod you're using. See if you can adjust where the toolbar is with it. If not, try another similar mod. I know both Resize it and More Advanced Toolbar are working, so you have a few options.

The jumps can also be from delays in the supply chain. If you do not have enough storage buildings, then your extractors might sometimes struggle to get rid of raw materials, which means they shut down production for a while. Same goes for processors that run out of raw materials. And processors might even import raw materials, because there are no available trucks to deliver anything to them.

In general you want at least one storage building of a type to be set to balanced and never be full and always have a handful of trucks available whenever you check it. Ideally have a couple of storage buildings like that in your city.

This guide goes into a lot more detail about storages and how important they are for a smooth production chain.

Since you are a couple who have the issue now, you can all post your output logs and then we can compare the mods you use. That should help narrow down what's causing it at least a bit, since it would be something you are all using, and likely not a mod I run, as my lights behave normally. See my reply a little further up for how to find and post your logs. :)

You always remove the trees to see if it makes a difference. Just save first, then remove them with a mod like Move It or Better Bulldoze and see if that helps performance.

I ran your city for a bit and messed around with a few things. I think your city might just have more efficient options compared to the public transport. Ofc I have no sense of how your city evolved over time and can't really compare to how it was when you had a lot higher public transport use.

Murdering your underground highway system gave a significant increase in public transport use (and ofc messed with traffic flow), which tells me that at least in some cases, it's just way more efficient than your public transport. The AI prioritises public transport, but only to a degree, so if alternate routes become much faster, then they will drive instead.

If I was moving forward with your city, I'd probably spend some time trying to improve the public transport setup, so it becomes a better option again. Alternately would be the option to work towards removing the underground highways and adjusting public transport and internal cargo rail to handle most of that traff... Read more

I did log out of Steam. shut it down, relogged. but that did not do the trick either...

You need to type it in yourself in the box for launch options. My Steam is in English, but the buttons should be in the same place. Once you click the "Set launch options" button, it opens the little window where you can add the -noWorkshop and then just click "Ok" once you're done. And to remove it you just leave the box empty and click "Ok"
