definenacl said: hello, I know this fix was created on may 7th 2020, but it sounded like a sort of universal fix for a checksum issue. I tried the above steps several times and I cant get the same checksum as my friend I am trying to play modded with. I got it to work once, but when I tried to continue our campaign the following day the issue came back. it is a list of 7 mods, I looked into the mods that we were using and it appears its not a known issue for any of them, we tried to get our checksums to match by removing 1 mod at a time to try and single out the issue, but that didn't work either. I tried unins...

Those files show the game running in fullScreen, but at a high refresh rate of 144 . Does it run okay like that, or not? If not, right click on stellaris.exe , properties, compatibility. Tick "disable fullscreen optimisations", apply and exit.

If it runs okay in fullscreen, What exactly happens with the problem in borderless or windowed modes? What do you see on the screen?

Are you now on 2.8.1 in the main game menu, or not ?

Has it ever worked for you on this machine or never yet?

What is your antivirus?

DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/Stellaris/settings.txt and pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox/Stellaris/logs/ folder, attach system.log , error.log .

Just so you know, I'm an external tech support consultant working at home, half a world away from Paradox. I have no access to developers or labs or test hardware. Even if I were I think I can confidently say that pulling a developer away from the next patch for a week would not be on the cards :)

I think I'd know if this was still a general problem. I do virtually all the Mac support for all the affected games, both here and in our ticketing system. For the record I did not get these problems on my own iMac when I was on Catalina (until ~ a month ago) and do not now on Big Sur.

Crusader Kings 2 is free to play on Steam now and is in the same game engine - does that have the same issues for you?

Please try the following:

- unsubscribe from all mods
- delete the folder Documents/paradox/Stellaris/mod/
- delete the file Documents/paradox/Stellaris/mods_registry.json
- delete the file Documents/paradox/Stellaris/launcher-v2.sqlite

Add Stellaris.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list. You should add steam.exe and C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2.2021.2/paradox launcher.exe to that list.

- subscribe to a few mods
- run the game up and see if those mods are now available to you.

I hope that does it for you!

Well, I'm not sure what to suggest from here. You have a fix available that you don't want to use for reasons outside the game.

Overall I simply don't understand why you have this problem at all any more, as I mentioned above it simply seems to have gone away for other users with recent updates to Catalina.

I can understand that! But I can't report a crashing save when mods are involved.

I think your goal here is to rescue that save, would that be right? If so you might try the User Mods forum, as they have more experience in what can be done by editing save files.

Good luck with that!

Disabling mods does not undo what effects they have already had on a save game file.

Do you get this in a galaxy that's never had any mods used in it?

Please try this:

- exit the Steam app entirely
- uninstall Paradox Launcher v2 from the Windows "Apps and features" utility, if still present.

Delete the following folders if still present:

- C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users//AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users//AppData/Roaming/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer.

- run steam.exe as the Windows Admin user

- run the game from the PLAY button in Steam

IF that doesn't help, in this folder are some .log files:
C:/users//AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
Please attach them here.

Please check whether any player is using the MP "helper" app GameFast, which crashes our games in MP. If so have them unload it before playing.

So you can run in fullScreen mode but not borderless or windowed? Because that is the opposite of the more common problem!

What exactly happens with the problem? What do you see on the screen?

In the game launcher please set Display mode to Borderless.

IF that doesn't help, Has the game ever run successfully on this computer? Or never?

IF IT USED TO RUN:
Please do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere, and user_empire_designs.txt from /Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/ if you have made any custom empires or races.
- "uninstall" in Steam-Stellaris
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/Stellaris AND Documents/Paradox/Stellaris folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add stellaris.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
- start the game with no mods active and test

In particular you need to make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam Stellaris or Documents Stellaris locations, be... Read more

I suspect you are looking at the list of old versions in the Steam Betas tab, is that right?

But 2.8.1 is not a beta, it is the current public release. Opt out of all betas and Steam will install it automatically.

Let's try forcing an update of the launcher.

Download the installer package for Windows: https://forumcontent.paradoxplaza.com/emailsignatures/2021.2-win-prod.zip

Unpack the file you just downloaded and place the three files in the Steam folder for the game you're having issues with. If asked if you want to replace already existing files click "yes" - that's a sign you are in the right place!

Then please repeat the launcher reinstall procedure from before.

Good luck with that!

I guess you reverted to an OS version that was causing this problem, because the newer OS was causing some unrelated problem, is that right?
