We are having trouble with Avast and our new launcher 2021.1 , although not necessarily this exact issue. Add stellaris.exe to the exceptions list of Avast. You should add steam.exe and C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2.2021.1/paradox launcher.exe to that list. You may need help from Avast support in how to allow those apps through fully.

The same may apply to other antivirus apps.

Let me know if that helps!

Avast is the AV app causing us the most problems at present. You might need to get help from their support to ensure that the launcher and game can read and write to the Windows User Documents folder.

You may not have mods_registry.json as that's an old file no longer used, but the sqlite one ought to be there. In Windows Explorer click on Documents in the left column, then in the right pane double click on Paradox Interactive and Stellaris. You should see it in there. Depending on your Windows Explorer settings it may display as just launcher-v2. And the mod folder should be there too.

VikingSyrup said: I've done everything in post #4, in addition I also uninstalled and reinstalled CK3 just in case, and manually added the previous version of the Paradox Launcher too. (Though #4 only said to add the latest one.) I just can't seem to get it to click either.
What antivirus app are you using? We're seeing particular problems with Avast but others could be an issue too.

Is is still the same problem as your OP, after all that? Or has it changed at all?

I think you have at least two separate problems, with the launcher and the game/Windows.

For the launcher, despite what you've tried it is almost certainly an antivirus problem. Please try the following:

- unsubscribe from all mods
- delete the folder Documents/paradox/stellaris/mod/
- delete the file Documents/paradox/stellaris/mods_registry.json
- delete the file Documents/paradox/stellaris/launcher-v2.sqlite

Add stellaris.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list. You should add steam.exe and C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2.2021.1/paradox launcher.exe to that list.

- subscribe to a few mods
- run the game up and see if those mods are now available to you.

For the game, DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start me... Read more

That crashes on my iMac but not my Windows machine. So I guess it may be an issue with Big Sur.

If you can get access to any Windows machine just run the game past that date, then you can probably move back to the Mac.

As for the bug can you make a new thread in Bug Reports forum here please, attach that save and make it clear the crash happens on MacOS only.

Sorry for that probem!

Did you go through everything in post #4? That process has been very successful in addressing these issues.

What AV app do you use?

That first screenshot shows you adding the game to the Windows Defender firewall, but that's is not the potential problem here - it's the antivirus/ransomware functionality of WD that can be the problem. Firewalls only govern external communications, they do nothing within your machine itself. The 6th screenshot is the right place but we don't see the game or Paradox Launcher added there - please add them to that Apps Allowed Through list.

That second screenshot shows me dxdiag.txt in your file system, but I need to actually see the content of that file, please attach it here.

Yes, I'm afraid your Intel 4000 video system is well below the published minimum requirement:
UserBenchmark: Intel HD 4000 (Mobile 1.25 GHz) vs Iris Pro 580 Skylake)
Unless you have access to a machine that meets those requirements, please seek a refund from where you bought the game.

Sorry about that!

Illegal instruction means there is a command in an executable that is not valid for the CPU to interpret. That's a pretty unlikely bug to get through any development process!

It tells us nothing about where the problem is or how to avoid it.

If you have a save game file that reliably shows this problem, please attach it here, preferably from just before the crash happens. I can test it on my iMac and Windows machines.

Does this only happen on speed 5? What do you see on lower speeds?

May as well update that nVidia driver to the 2021 one:
Download Drivers | NVIDIA
And set the refreshRate in the launcher to 60.

If none of that helps, is fullScreen mode any better?

Removing openGl should have helped to some degree, as that is slower that DirectX. Are you saying removing that made no difference at all?

Can i see new copies of all five of those files I asked for before, please?

That's a pretty serious bug, if it's a bug. Are there any mods involved here?

Can you try that save on a Windows machine?

I don't know what might have changed a few days ago as there's been no game patch recently. I guess it might be something at the back end.

I'll run it by the devs, but it may be an IT issue.

FYI the only supported distro is Ubuntu.

Has this game always been like this on this machine? Or it used to work?

Our similar game Crusader Kings 2 is now feee to play on Steam, does it have the same problem?

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/Stellaris/settings.txt and pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox/Stellaris/logs/ folder, attach system.log , error.log .

Also in Steam please click on Steam-Help-System Info, and paste everything there into a text file and attach that here.

If you move user_empire_designs.txt from /Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/ , does the game then start?

In the game launcher please set Display mode to Borderless.

IF that doesn't help, Please do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-EU4
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/EU4 AND Documents/Paradox/EU4 folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add EU4.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
- start the game with no mods active and test

In particular make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam EU4 or Documents EU4 locations, before installing again.

Also if you have installed RivaTuner, RadeonPro, or a gaming VPN app called Evolve, or the MSI Gaming App, or Duet, disable it as it clashes with this game.

Most likely your video system is below the game's minimum requirements.

DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7 or later). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/CK3/pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox/CK3/logs/ folder, attach system.log , error.log

His launcher is old and has failed to update itself.

Please try this:

- exit the Steam app entirely
- uninstall Paradox Launcher v2 from the Windows "Apps and features" utility, if still present.

Delete the following folders if still present:

- C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users//AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users//AppData/Roaming/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer.

- run steam.exe as the Windows Admin user

- run the game from the PLAY button in Steam
