What AV app do you use? Both Avast and AVG seem to be causing this at present.

Please try the following:

- unsubscribe from all mods
- delete the folder Documents/paradox/Stellaris/mod/
- delete the file Documents/paradox/Stellaris/mods_registry.json
- delete the file Documents/paradox/Stellaris/launcher-v2.sqlite

Add Stellaris.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list. You should add steam.exe and C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2.2021.1/paradox launcher.exe to that list.

- subscribe to a few mods
- run the game up and see if those mods are now available to you.

I hope that does it for you!

Right click on this game in your Steam library, manage, browse local files. You'll see a folder Binaries, ck3.exe is in there. Exit Steam entirely then double click on that ck3.exe to run it.

What happens?

That's part of Steam, not our game or launcher. You may in fact have a Steam issue then.

Does this only affect this game, not say HOI4, EU4 or CK2?

I see, so I guess that shows the stuttering problem is not related to CPU6 maxing out, that's a red herring.

We are left with basically no clues why this is happening to you!

@Guraan I wonder if you have any ideas here, based on what you see above? Thanks!

When you get that error, run up Task Manager-processes. Do you see any of these still running?

stellaris.exe
dowser.exe
cefprocess.exe
bootstrapper-v2.exe
paradox launcher.exe

If so, kill it in there and see if that allows you to run the game again.

Yes, your antivirus app has deleted or quarantined that file. Which one do you use? You may need help from their support to stop it doing that.

It's not at all a waste of time, you have a problem and I'm here to help with that.

Best to post in your own fresh thread in future, rather than "met too" someone else's, to avoid confusion for anyone else who finds these threads!

Please do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-CK3
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/CK3 AND Documents/Paradox/CK3 folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add CK3.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
- start the game with no mods active and test

In particular make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam CK3 or Documents CK3 locations, before installing again.

tomascada said: Well, I don't know about everyone else, but for me it started working again today without doing anything. I guess the launcher got updated, because it's a bit different than before.
I suspect your AV app got updated actually, or accommodated itself to the launcher, which did not change in the last day or so.

The current game patch is 1.2.2 which you should already be on.

I don't know where that first number comes from, not seen that before. But the launcher is now in there correctly. You can't add ck3.exe there?

What happens if you exit the Steam app entirely and run ck3.exe directly?

Not a known problem on Macs, I have to say!

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/CK3/pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox/CK3/logs/ folder, attach system.log , error.log

Also in Steam please click on Steam-Help-System Info, and paste everything there into a text file and attach that here.

Please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU)
1/ before starting the game up and
2/ in the main game menu
3/ after whatever play time you can get before the problem happens.

Have you been playing on GeForce Now perhaps? We are seeing this problem in that situation.

Please lodge a support ticket at paradox.zendesk.com and we'll fix you up there.

I can still load games (though I only have one I have already won at) and I can do the resume fuction to do a game but it gives me a random species to start with. It was working fine before I went bed but when I woke up it refused to let me start a new game.
That problem has nothing to do with the one discussed in this thread.

That still shows CPU 6, I see, which is a little odd that it chooses the same one each time to carry the main threads. Disallowing the game from using CPU6 doesn't really change anything, is that right?

In the Windows search box enter msconfig. Go into Boot-advanced, is number of processors there ticked? If so please untick it and reboot.

Two mod errors in there. You are doing this testing with no mods enabled, is that right?

Does this problem happen on ever game speed, or just speed 5?

All your disks except D: are low on free space; especially for C: Windows likes to have at least 10% free as elbow room. If your Windows paging files is on C: , the default, you should free up as much space as you can there.

Right click on stellaris.exe , properties, compatibility, and tick Disable fullScreen optimisations and Apply that. In the launcher set Display mode to fullScreen, is that any better?

And finally if none of that helps, run Task Manager and go to the Performance tab. When this problem is happening, what do you see in there? Are there jumps in CPU or GPU that match the stuttering you see in the game?

The sqlite file gets created when mods come into play in the launcher, it's essentially a database of what mods you are subscribed to. The only reason I can see for it not being there is no mods subscriptions ... ?

Yes, Avast is absolutely the issue here, I am sure. I don't use it so can't really help with it in detail I'm afraid. There must be ways of telling it to leave our launcher alone as others have done that successfully!

We are having trouble with Avast and our new launcher 2021.1 , although not necessarily this exact issue. Add stellaris.exe to the exceptions list of Avast. You should add steam.exe and C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2.2021.1/paradox launcher.exe to that list. You may need help from Avast support in how to allow those apps through fully.

The same may apply to other antivirus apps.

Let me know if that helps!
