The game appears to be running in Windows 8 compat mode, do you do that? Please undo it.

What happens if you exit the Steam app entirely and run ck3.exe directly from Windows Explorer?

Then my guess is you actually have a Steam problem. Please do a full **clean** re-install of Steam and game:

- move any valued save games elsewhere, and user_empire_designs.txt from /Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/ if you have made any custom empires or races.
- "uninstall" in Steam-Stellaris
- exit the Steam app completely
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/Stellaris AND Documents/Paradox/Stellaris folders
- delete everything in the Steam folder EXCEPT steam.exe and the SteamApps folder
- run steam.exe to rebuild all that
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add stellaris.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
- start the game with no mods active and test

I'm not aware of this as a known problem. If you revert to an older game version (that used to work) do you still see this?

In the game launcher please set Display mode to Borderless.

IF that doesn't help, Please do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere, and user_empire_designs.txt from /Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/ if you have made any custom empires or races.
- "uninstall" in Steam-Stellaris
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/Stellaris AND Documents/Paradox/Stellaris folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add stellaris.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
- start the game with no mods active and test

In particular you need to make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam Stellaris or Documents Stellaris locations, before installing again.

Also if you have FRAPS or the MSI Gaming App or Rivatuner installed,... Read more

Can you two play MP with NO mods at all enabled? IOW do you have the same checksum that way?

Please try this:

- exit the Steam app entirely
- uninstall Paradox Launcher v2 from the Windows "Apps and features" utility, if still present.

Delete the following folders if still present:

- C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users//AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users//AppData/Roaming/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer.

- run steam.exe as the Windows Admin user

- run the game from the PLAY button in Steam

IF that doesn't help, in this folder are some .log files:
C:/users//AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
Please attach them here.

The game itself has not changed since 1.1.3 was released over a month ago.

Are these crashes all in one particular campaign? Or also in any new one you might start as a test?

If in one particular campaign, it's probably worth making a new thread in Bug Reports and attaching it there.

If it is happening any any new campaign you start too, I guess a Windows or driver update has happened, or the game installation may be bad: in that situation
do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-CK3
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/CK3 AND Documents/Paradox/CK3 folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add CK3.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
- start the game with no mods active and test

Blutvogt said: If i start the game direct from the directory, the game close immediate without any problem.

Starting the launcher through steam and closing again (no game start) makes no problem.
What should happen is when you run the game from our launcher, the launcher itself terminates. I've seen cases where that didn't happen but not recently. Are you seeing any of these processes still in Task Manager?

dowser.exe
bootstrapper-v2.exe
paradox launcher.exe
cefprocess.exe
stellaris.exe

Exit the Steam app entirely then run ck3.exe directly from Windows Explorer - what happens then? Any Windows error shown?

No crashes in the game recorded in that dxdiag, interestingly.
Blazadin said: Reinstalled game via Gamepass, mashed ESC while loading launcher and continued to mash escape as the game loaded. Got it to work again.
That sounds like the old wsg fix for gamepass ... I assume the Steam copy still fails?

What launcher version do you see? Current is 2020.15

If you run the game from stellaris.exe directly instead of from the launcher, does this still happen?

Please try the following:

- unsubscribe from all mods
- delete the folder Documents/paradox/Stellaris/mod/
- delete the file Documents/paradox/Stellaris/mods_registry.json
- delete the file Documents/paradox/Stellaris/launcher-v2.sqlite
- subscribe to a few mods
- run the game up and see if those mods are now available to you.

I hope that does it for you!

1. in Windows explorer click on Documents in the left column. You'll see \Paradox Interactive\ there, double click on that, then on \Crusader Kings III\ - last_save.ck3 really should be there.

3. if you are doing cloud saves there will be no files in the /save games/ folder.

I suggested the May 2020 driver version for a reason, as the last known good one - can I ask you to do that clean reinstall again but use that one?

I can't help you with stopping that happening, I'm sorry. I guess you want to report this as a bug or an improvement suggestion?

Meantime you can just delete them of course. Hopefully when the MP problems are fixed this will decrease anyway!

I can't help with editing save files, I'm sorry - maybe try the User Mods forum.

As to how it happened - any mods in use here? or maybe a game or computer crash while saving? If you start a new test campaign is it still like that?

This won't be a game bug but a video card or driver problem.

DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7 or later). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/CK3/pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox/CK3/logs/ folder, attach system.log , error.log

This is Ironman or not, or both?

Has this always happened for you - you've never been able to autosave the game even once? Do manual saves work?
