lmao thats so canon for runescape, just reuse an old asset
The original wilderness rework was done in 2014 before there was a graphics team working on old school so they worked with what they had 😅

Is it because art requires the finished product (or close enough) before it can even be polled?
Certainly an element! Nowadays we have concept artists so we can cut back on wasted asset creation quite early on.
It’s mostly down to getting 75%+ to agree on a visual direction as it’s very subjective and nostalgia goggles get in the way while content proposals don’t have quite the same issues. I don’t believe democracy is the answer to art direction 😅 it’s a classic case of too many cooks!
I'd love to be able to use 1000 red, green or blue bird eggs to unlock Zamorak Hawk, Guthix Raptor or Saradomin Owl, respectively, as pets. Providing no bonus of course. Always loved them
Edit: Also change Raptor to Eagle or something as Raptor is an extremely generic term which includes Hawk. Pedantic I know, but also bothered me
I managed to repurpose the owl with the sepulchre! That was always my favourite back in the day. I’d love to find an official way to make them pets again but not sure what content it would be attached to that the player base would accept
Id like if art reworks needed to be polled. Im still traumatized from the unpolled change to elves with priff release
We’ve done a range of things in the past, from no polling to comparison polls to standard polling. I’m not convinced the standard method works with artwork personally, at least that’s the conclusion I’ve came to after 6 years on the product. We learnt a lot of what not to do with the Elf update, I still stand by it but wouldn’t be opposed to approaching those assets again if we are to ever venture to that part of the world in the future :)
Original is from the era of recolour-scape where asset reuse was king, much prefer the new one.
All the added details seem to be derived from the Chronicle artwork which is kind of interesting. Someone has had this idea of what he could look like in HD for over 5 years.
Indeed this was riffed off of the concept made by Mod DBarker for chronicle! We had our lovely Mod Jerv oldschool-ify it so it fit more with our current asset standards :)
I wonder how many more Summoning assets are in the game. I know the Smoke Devils are actually ripped off from Summoning assets as well.
While we had a bunch of new dogs made during our last game jam we also had a bunch left over from Summoning, essentially all the dog pets of you can remember back when that skill was released :D I think there’s a bunch of updated bird models as well which I believe are in use as well as the dreadfowl and spirit wolf
I like the new one a lot but I hope there is still a place for the old one somewhere in the game! Maybe in the background of a quest or in the varrock museum lol..
The asset Vet'ion currently uses is a recolour of an existing npc known as Ranalph Devere, it's one of the three long-dead warriors fought during the Legends' Quest. Understandably not very well known as you only see them once. It was designed to be 1x1 which is why it looks out of place when scaled up to 3x that size.
Surprising amount of reused assets honestly, I recognised at least 4-5 attacks & hazards from other bosses and parts of the game
It’s because the footage was taken before we had made the bosses projectiles, amongst other things.
What’s your opinion?
He says blue, I say blurple
Love what you’ve done with the entrance! We’ve done something similar in the nexus room, so it ties into that surprisingly well 😄 going to be a tough decision… Good luck!
Unless there's a Scabaras boss phase where you fight the ball of shit independently from the boss, I ain't coming.
If you make it own clean I’d be surprised 😂
I think in the future like with Justiciar and Inferno cape, yall should host design competitions and just let the community make designs. That way there is no massive backlash and it gets the community involved in a positive way. Just my 2 cents.
I think you have a valid point, coming to the player base with a single design of BiS armour/weapon is bound to split people as art is very subjective. I found the process for designing the twisted bow quite slow and tedious (I basically ran straw polls on options until we found a silhouette the majority liked) , but it may be the better route when creating prestigious items. Something to consider when we approach this next time :)
This looks great :)
😟 noooooo west. Lol well your still my favorite mod I don't miss any of your dev / qna streams because it's clear you have passion and very great vibes. 🙂
Haha, thanks 😅 Once tombs is out of the way I think it’ll be time for a nice big art stream again like we did for AKD
I know west didn't make this. I'd imagine the art team is working on raids 3 and this arena was just some small part of Jagex.
Hate to break it to you but it was me. Honestly, I hate whoever thought to have the MTA open up to the back of the duel arena building. Leaves no space for anything :/ maybe I’ll go back to the drawing board on this one 😅
Devs reading this, you did indeed do super bad. But we still love you.
Sorry :(
Glad you're enjoying the content :D
Yep
I guess it’s specifically the flat brown color. The icons in RuneScape have always had a slight gradient and texture to them. I like that the current ui pretty closely matched the pc client ui in terms of style
The aim here was to have more consistent graphics throughout the UI while also squaring up the buttons so they fitted together better. The new button backing isn’t anything new though, it’s just the border of the inventory repurposed for a more consistent style. It seems to have insulted a lot of players though, so perhaps something to reconsider 😅
I hope the new ui gets changed to look more old school. The current ui buttons feel very old school, but the ones in the blog don’t and I don’t really like the look of them. Excited about the additional features though!
