This week’s Ask VALORANT covers weekly challenges, filthy smurfs, and...wait, did you say “test server”?

Q

Thoughts on adding more weekly challenges?

A

The goal of weekly challenges was to provide a bulk source of XP progress and tie some playful texture to the progression experience. To be frank, we're not happy with the current state, as some of them can be a grind. It's also been difficult to strike the right balance between interesting missions and not promoting unhealthy play patterns (eg. playing only to harvest orbs and use your ult).

Our short term outlook is to reduce the completion requirement for many weeklies in Act III and remove the worst offenders completely. So hopefully these changes, along with the extended length of Act III, many more of you will progress further and faster into the Battlepass.

Long term, we want to revisit how to keep game-to...

PS - I always try to come back as soon as everything is taken care of.

Iirc there’s already a few round forgiveness in place, so you should have enough time to take care of your child and return :) but I’ll bring this up as we take things into consideration.

nice, grats! only one more win to lock in that purple dorito! diamond is a real big achievement!

i actually have a similar path myself, got super into competitive games in WoW arena back in the bc/wotlk days and somehow ended up working on and playing valorant :)

!pin Hello o7

We realize just how disruptive AFKers are being in games and are currently working on a way to better detect AFKers, figure out whether they’re AFK cause of connectivity issues or if it’s intentional, and increasing penalties for those we find to be AFK.

I hope you’ll be able to see some meaningful change in this area before the year is up 🥺

In R6 some maps have the callout Harry Potter because it’s under a set of stairs. I think that’s the perfect name for that spot

Edit: I’ve mostly been a lurker on Reddit and I never expected to get this many upvotes. Thanks guys!

Being a Siege player prior to Valorant, my first thought was "isn't that already the default call-out?"

I'm excited to see these new changes though

Yeah, don’t worry :) we’re planning on checking the player’s connection prior to making any punishment judgement calls.

Here's my ideas. None of these should work if done between premades.

maybe measure deviations from general behaviour of all players and from that specific player individually. Like how often comms are used in a round and what the volume was. How often shots are fired at teammates in buyphase, incl knife. How often teammates are negatively affected by abilities, Like flashed or dmg dealt. time between round start and death. Maybe link those values to reports attributed to the player per round. Since those values can be ambiguous, let players rate the match afterwards to help interpret them (dota does it). With all these numbers, you could probably determine a behaviour score for each round and set a threshold of toleratable behaviour based on the player Population avg. Imo it has to consider individual Player values very flexibly too, since mic settings, comms frequency and ability use is different for each player. You could even warn players in Realtime that theyre gonna f...

I actually see a lot of similarities in the way we are both approaching the problem! I can't go into detail about the logic we are going with just yet, but know that you raise some good points. Additionally, I agree that we should have some sort of instant feedback type message that notifies players that what they are doing can result in penalties if they continue to do so. That way, the player has already been warned :)

We'll be posting a few software engineering roles soon if you're interested. Should definitely apply!

Oh yea, smurfs :( Going to have to link up with the compet team on that one and see what kind of solution we can come up with together. Noted, though! Will look into it.

Thank you /u/npcSara for pinning this reply, and thank you Riot necrotix for the response as well. I did edit the post just before you replied with a possible suggestion tying into Vanguard (Not sure how feasible that is, but brainstorming)

As far as other feedback, I think one of the biggest "solutions" that could help is to really jump on this hard. If the new team (congrats btw!) can agree on very heavy punishment it could set a good precedent going forward to show that this type of behavior is not tolerated (Not that it ever was to begin with) and that any instances of this happening will result in very strict punishment.

I definitely see where you're going with that suggestion! Honestly, tackling AFKers is at the top of the to-do list right now, so I'm hoping y'all see some meaningful change before the year ends (can't believe it's already almost 2021). Hold us accountable to it, though. This is just a start, and we'll have a lot to build upon, but the team is super excited to dive into this space and drive some positive change within the game.

Again, sorry for the negative experience in game :(

!pin Hi friend, thanks for bringing this up. We've noticed a huge uptick in this type of behavior and it's actually at the top of our list of stuff we're trying to deal with right now. We just spun up a new team (mine!) on VALORANT and one of our missions dealing with behavioral issues you just described. We are in alignment of penalizing players more harshly and are looking into ways of detecting when a player is either friendly firing, afking, not participating in combat, etc. I'm very open to any feedback, ideas, or general thoughts you may have in the space as well.

In the meantime, I'll find Riot Gyudon internally and tell them that you weren't at fault, so rest assured :)
