In January, 82 years ago, production of the Bf 109 E-1 began. The E-1 is the first "modern" Bf 109, as it was developed from the testing of earlier models in the Spanish Civil War. The E-1 served as a key part of the German Blitzkrieg that dominated the early years of WW2.

86 years ago, the P-26B-35 took off for the first time. This upgraded P-26 was given a new fuel-injected 600 hp engine. The P-26 was the last fighter made by Boeing to enter service until acquiring McDonnell Douglas and producing the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

In January 1939, 82 years ago, the Dornier Do 17 Z-2 made its first flight. Fact: During the Battle of Britain in WWII, a Z-2 suffered engine troubles, fell behind formation and was rammed by an RAF plane. The tail broke off, and the Z-2 crashed into London Victoria station!

Today, 74 years ago, what became the T32E1 appeared. In a bid to create a tank similar to the M26 Pershing but with better armor, a few prototype tanks designated "T32" were made. Two of these later had weak spots in their frontal armor removed and were re-designated "T32E1".

In January, 80 years ago, the Sea Hurricane Mk. IB took to the skies. The aircraft was the first carrier-capable Hurricane allowing for both take-off and recovery by carriers unlike previous versions. In July 1941, the type scored its first kill against a Do 18 flying boat.

In January 1944, 77 years ago, the T-34-85 (1944) appeared for the first time. The 1944 variant saw modifications to the turret based on field tests and direct combat feedback. Close to 18,000 1944 variants of the T-34-85 were built by 1945 in the Krasnoye Sormovo tank factory.

In 1952, 69 years ago, the T54E1 first appeared. The T54E1 was the second of the T54 prototype family and was equipped with an oscillating turret and autoloading mechanism similar to those seen on French tanks of the period. The project ended in 1957 with only 2 T54E1's built.
On this day, 80 years ago, the H8K had its maiden flight. Widely regarded as the best flying boat of WWII, this whale of a plane was deeply respected by Allied crews for its powerful defensive armament. Fun fact: A transport variant capable of carrying 62 troops was also made!
