When modding it's important to understand that this is unsupported content. Mods are created by other players as a hobby, and while we think having the option to mod games adds to the experience, we cannot guarantee that mods won't cause problems. So it is expected that there is some extra troubleshooting needed when you mod a game.

We may need to set up a custom-sized pagefile for you. Unfortunately, the way Windows handles automatic small increases of the pagefile comes with some instability, so having a large pagefile to avoid the frequent changes in its size makes the game much more stable. I recommend setting it to 32000 MB.

Here are a few guides on how to set it up. Make sure to restart the PC to apply the settings, and that you have enough free harddisk space for it.

When dealing with mod problems, this community-created list of known broken and incompatible mods is a good place to start! With a bit of luck the troublemakers are known and it can help you get rid of them. :)

I'm sorry to hear you're having problems with the game! I'd be happy to try and help figure out what's causing it, so we can get you back to playing the game.

Do you get a Windows "Blue screen of death" or the "game loaded broken so the map is all blue" problem?

And do you have the same issues when you add the launch options -noWorkshop and -disableMods to Steam and test on a new game? This excludes mods as a cause and helps us narrow down the issue, which in turn gets us closer to a solution that will work for you.

How To Set Launch Options
  • Right-click on the game title under the Library in Steam and select Properties.
  • Enter the launch options you wish to apply in the box (be sure to separate each code with a space). Should look like this:
    -noWorkshop -disableMods
  • Close the game's Properties window and launch the game.

If you haven't set up a custom-sized pagefile (I recommend 32000 MB ) Windows might be adjusting the size of it on the fly. Unfortunately, it doesn't handle small changes well, which happens with Cities: Skylines.

Of course, there is no guarantee it's related to the pagefile, but we need the output_log.txt to determine what's happening as the game starts. You are very welcome to make a post on our official support forums and we'll have a look.

The output_log.txt can be found in the Cities_Data folder where the game is installed. The easiest way to find it is to right-click on the game in your Library, select Properties, find the tab Local Files and click Browse. Then just attach the log to a post on the forum.

Great! It might be a little while before someone has a chance to look into it, but you should have a reply within a day or so.

No, the log is usually quite big. We really need the actual .txt file. You can attach it to the post like a screenshot or any other file. The forum accepts .txt files no problem.

Just attach the file itself, so we have the whole thing.

Do you have Toggleable Whiteness mod installed perhaps?

We'll need to have a look at the output_log.txt to see what's happening and where the problem is. Steam isn't great for support as we can't attach files here, so I will need you to make a post on the official support & bug forum here:

The output_log.txt is found in the Cities_Data folder where the game is installed. The easiest way to find it is right-clicking on the game in your Library, select Properties, find the tab Local Files and click Browse.

You can attach the log directly to the forum post and we'll have a look and see what's up.

Are you unable to find the AppData folder? Or are all the Paradox Interactive folders not there?

My bad! I totally missed it was the launcher you have problems with. Try the steps in this thread, and if that doesn't help follow the steps at the end to contact Paradox Support.

Does it also happen if you test on a new map? Or just with your existing save?

The log just cuts off I'm afraid. Most likely it's too long for zerobin. We aren't able to provide support here on Steam, so I recommend you make a thread on the official support forums here:

https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/forums/support-bug-reports.879/

You can attach the log as a file, so lenght won't matter. That's the best way for us to have a look at what's happening.

When using the editors it's best to disable any mods you don't absolutely need. If you don't need any, you can easily do that by using the -disableMods launch option.

Most mods were made for the simulation that happens in a city and that can cause issues in the editor. So best to not use them if you don't have to.

For figuring out how a mod like Building Variations works I recommend checking out the mod description. There's usually an explanation of how it works and how to use it. :)
