FYI the launcher has nothing to do with game checksums or achievements.

I don't know what can be changing your checksums on reboot, nor deleting some file that Steam then had to re-acquire. Conceivably that could be an antivirus app doing something wrong, a Windows or file system problem, or even malware.

Anything changed in that area on this machine of late?

Sorry, is this CK2 or CK3?

Interesting. Do you know which of those two steps appeared to help? Or they both did a bit perhaps?

And does this only happen at the fastest game speed perhaps? Or at any speed?

I'm not aware of any way of doing that, no. But do you know why you have this problem? A slow or unreliable internet connection perhaps?

You can of course just run ck3.exe directly, but that means no mod use.

Feel free to post them in detail in the Bug Reports forum. Thanks!

Naively I guess if the game ran fine on one video card but not another, it's not going to be the game at fault ... have you deleted the Documents folder for CK3 so the new system writes a new one?

Aso if you are running Catalyst it may be trying to 'optimise' for the game, if so unload that app and see if that changes anything.

So two separate problems, the launcher and the game, ISTM.

The black launcher screen in Stellaris could be this issue:

Thought it was a bad install, temperature, etc but all solutions were moot. Sometimes I can play for hours, or sometimes minutes as it seems random. Crashed today after I opened a NPCs portrait to interact with him in the very early game.

Very strange bug which seems hard to find, other paradox games run fine as well so it's a shame the game I like the most is the only one that crashes.

Besides this forum I've seen some i...

Well, we know our launcher does not cause this to other users! I have no explanation how it could be having these effects on your machine, I have to say.

I guess try a clean reinstall of the whole launcher:

- exit the Steam app entirely
- uninstall Paradox Launcher v2 from the Windows "Apps and features" utility, if still present.

Delete the following folders if still present:

- C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users//AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users//AppData/Roaming/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer.

- run steam.exe as the Windows Admin user

- run the game from the PLAY button in Steam to install it again. You'll probably have to exit and re-run the launcher once or twice for it to fully update to 2021.5.2 .

We are just not seeing this as a general problem with this game, not sure why you are having such trouble.

DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach your Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/logs/ folder, attach system.log , error.log , exceptions.log

There should not be any mod files in that folder, it's only for the launcher really.

I begin to think you have some larger computer or Windows problem here! Would you say you are having Windows problems outside this game at all?

A major patch 1.4 just came out, so please do a new clean reinstall as per post #4 above, and test with a new campaign - any better?

That's interesting ... can you say what exact location/folder there?

It is not possible, I am sorry. They do not provide any way of distributing older or alternate versions of games, unlike Steam or GoG.

Is this when playing a campaign that has never had any mods used in it?

I see you have our similar games HOI4, EU4 and Stellaris - do that play okay on this machine?

If this was happening on Windows it would typically be an antivirus app getting in the way, and be fixed by adding exceptions in that app and/or running as the Windows Admin user.

Pretty unlikely for those to apply here, I assume you use no AV app like most Mac users?

Given that both the game and launcher are up to date for you, I'm struggling to see why you can run ck3.app but the launcher cannot.

You can bypass the launcher by following these instructions:

- Download the attached file dowser-mac.txt
- rename it to just dowser
- move it to your Home folder (the one in Finder with the little house icon)
- run the Terminal app. That will open up a command line to that folder; do LS to check that dowser is there.
- then do this command: chmod +x dowser This is to set the file to be executable on your Mac
- then move that file to the Steam-CK3-launcher folder, to over... Read more

Most people don't realise that in dual video setups all video goes through the Intel before it gets to the nVidia or AMD GPU. So yes the Intel driver version can matter, with this game in particular for some reason.

Well done!

That log looks very much like a corrupted installation, unless you are using mods that have a problem.

Please do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-CK3
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/CK3 AND Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3 folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add CK3.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
- start the game with no mods active and test with a new campaign, NOT with any existing one

In particular make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam CK3 or Documents CK3 locations, before installing again.

Your issue may not be a launcher problem. What version of it do you see? Current is 2021.5.2

What happens if you run hoi4.exe and ck3.exe directly from File Explorer, which bypasses the launcher?
