Personal opinion here: Games are supposed to be fun, and kicking someone/being kicked is a bad experience. If you have a certain requirement for your games, you'd be better off gathering a crew with the same mindset.
You might be feeling that the lone wolf in your example is wasting your time, but when you kick the loss is on him.
I'll encourage communication any day over forcibly removing someone who might not be up to par on strategies. Make it a part of the game. Train the new recruits. Get some red color into that green beard. You never really know who's on the other end - maybe it's someone who's trying to learn or got sidetracked by something cool down a cave. Maybe they thought someone had their back, but they went the other way soon after.
Overall, just have fun. I get that failing a mission because of someone else sucks, but we've all been there. There's fun in failure too, even though the payout is worse.
