Happy New Year! It's time for the first snapshot of 2022 to hit the shelves. This development will be leading up to the release of version 1.18.2. With this release we aim to address a few issues before moving on and starting with the Wild Update snapshots.

This snapshot contains tweaks to the world seed input and adds a new placefeature command. On top of that, it also fixes a bunch of bugs.

Happy mining!

Hi! This is heavily work in progress (the digging animation), and will be redone before we release it to the public.

In the mean time, I showed off an animation that is more finished, the emerge behavior. You can take a look here:

We’re now releasing Minecraft: Java Edition 1.18.1. This release fixes a critical security issue for multiplayer servers, changes how the world fog works to make more of the world visible and fixes a couple of other bugs.

If you are running a multiplayer server, we highly encourage you to upgrade to this version as soon as possible.

Enjoy!

Technical Changes in 1.18.1

A critical security issue has been discovered that affects Minecraft. If you have the game running, close down all instances and restart the launcher.

We're also now releasing a third release candidate for Minecraft 1.18.1 to fix the security issue. If there are no major issues following this release, no further changes will be done before the full release.

Happy mining!

Hey sliced_lime, big fan. I did see those issues on the tracker but was thrown off because the main issue involved an observer which didn't describe my problem that well. Looking back, I see Mojang did say the problem was with the /clone command in the comments. I guess my experience on the tracker hasn't been the best. Several bugs I've been watching haven't been resolved in ages, so I let my urgency get the better of me here. Just forget I said anything and thanks for all the work you guys do.

Yes - there are lots of bugs open, and it's sometimes hard to find things. I totally understand the frustration of bugs not getting fixed too - but ultimately, if something is going to get fixed, it's because there was a report on there about it :)

There's a really bad bug with the /clone command and command blocks. In some cases running /clone or a function containing multiple instances of /clone will cause a weird feedback loop where the command block will keep running every game tick, or in some odd cases every X game ticks, and it will refuse to stop until you break the command block. It happens regardless of if the command block is impulse, chain, or repeating. Please fix as it makes mapmaking literally impossible!

Reporting bugs on the tracker is much more effective than as a comment on reddit. And if you went to the tracker, you would've also found that you didn't need to, in the first place.

I updated my SMP to 1.18 yesterday and when logging in one chunk in my base was not loading. I myself, all my dogs and a few villagers fell through the world into the void.

Had to revert the server. Glad to see this fixed.

This bug only existed in 1.18.1-rc1.

We're now releasing the second (uh... something something hopefully) release candidate for Minecraft 1.18.1. This release candidate fixes a chunk rendering issue. If there are no major issues following this release, no further changes will be done before the full release.

It’s been quite the trek, but we’re here. At the summit. The Caves & Cliffs Update: Part II is out today, completing the much anticipated cave update. What better way to celebrate than by climbing to the top of a higher than ever mountain. Let’s take a moment and just take in that view. Wait. What’s that sound. Don’t tell me that goat is back.

AAAAARGH.

Ouff! Ouch! Ow!

Where am I? It’s dark down here! It’s almost as if I fell a greater distance than I would have before today. Figures. While I try to get out of this dripstone cave, I hope you enjoy all of the new features that 1.18 brings. Could you pass me a candle before you leave? It really is dark down here.

Going through a nether portal takes 3-5 seconds if there's no one on the other side, during which time you fall through the world (scary as heck, even when I'm used to it) before getting pulled back up.

Even though it's no harm done ultimately, and it resolved, I feel like this would be a lot better if it were just a loading screen rather than falling through the ground until things properly load.

I agree, we should fix this falling thing.

I wouldn't do it. Performance on vanilla server.jar is terrible and optimizations (like fabric with mods or paper) only come in full releases. If you want to play in your own server I would recommend having at least 4Gb of ram and a good single threaded cpu.

Single thread performance is important, yes, but worldgen can now take full advantage of all available CPU cores.

Have you tested the new vanilla server? It is likely still worse than modded ones (as they don't have to fully support vanilla features), but we've implemented a lot of server-side optimizations for this release.
