The refresh rate is set to 144 there, can you make it 60 please?

And you may as well update that AMD video driver, i think there's a new one out this month

You are running the game in openGL mode, which is always slower than DirectX - can I ask why that is?

Please remove that launch option and let us know if that helps.

I'm under the impression that buying or getting the game on GamePass only gets you the base game, no DLCs - you need to buy them separately. However I'm not familiar with the Ultimate one you mention; is that supposed to include all DLCs?

Crashing on save is usually either an antivirus app getting in the way, or running out of memory.

What AV app do you use? Make sure the new 1.7.2 ck3.exe is in all its exceptions lists.

If those don't help:
DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach here your Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/logs/ folder, attach here system.log , error.log , exceptions.log

Hard to see how a graphics setting could cause a Windows error.

Please do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-CK3
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/CK3 AND Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3 folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add CK3.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
- start the game with no mods active and test

In particular make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam CK3 or Documents CK3 locations, before installing again.

Definitely odd; that dowser log says it can't start bootstrapper-v2.exe yet the bootstrapper log looks fine. Was there no cpatch.log in that same folder?

Can you start the game with ck3.exe directly in File Explorer?

I have verified the game files in steam as well as clean uninsta...

Please don't reopen old threads, the launcher and game have changed a lot in the last 15 months. In future please start your own, thanks.

The 1603/1605 errors we see there are typically a previous other installation stuck, or a problem in the Windows update/install processes.

If you see msiexec running in Task manager-processes, kill it and try this launcher install again please.

Otherwise run the Update app in Windows, does it load okay, find anything to apply - whether a patch, update, or whole new Windows 10 version? If so do that and reboot, then try this launcher install again please.

If still no good, do you see Paradox Launcher v2 in the Windows Control Panel to uninstall? If so does it uninstall cleanly, or get an error doing that? You can use this MS tool to clear the stuck install/uninstall:

FYI this game is NOT restricted to a single core.

FPS per se is not a good measure of game performance for a no n-action game like this, but if you get stuttering and slow menu responses that's a different matter of course.

Right click on stellaris.exe , properties, compatibility. Tick "disable fullScreen optimisations" untick every other box in that dialog, Apply and exit.
Then in the launcher Game Settings menu, select fullScreen display mode, Vsync off, refresh rate 60.

Is that any better? If not,

That's an unusual Windows error code, it's not one I have an immediately answer for I'm afraid.

Has this game ever worked on this machine? Or it's been like this since you had it?

Do CK2, EU4 and HOI4 work okay on it? Or do they have problems too?

Both you and your brother still get this slowness with a third person, are you saying?

Is there any way you can try this from some other location?

Is it the same "cannot communicate with Steam" error?

if so, next thing to try is a full **clean** re-install of Steam and game:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-EU4
- exit the Steam app entirely

- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/EU4 AND Documents/Paradox Interactive/EU4 folders
- delete everything in the Steam folder EXCEPT steam.exe and the SteamApps folder
- run steam.exe to rebuild all that

- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add EU4.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
- start the game with no mods active and test

Does that help?

I did get this from one affected Gamepass user:

In case anyone else had issues when they purchased from gamepass.
It shows no downloads and the dlc by itself looks like you need to purchase it.
Click the dlc and click the purchase.
It’ll change and say you own this already.
Click the same box that now says you own this already and it’ll ask you to download it.
Do the download and boom it finally adds
You need to do it for all DLC downloads.

Please let us know if that helps you!

In that case you have an unrelated problem, as that bug is definitely fixed now.

We see no crashes in ck3.exe in that dxdiag.

Does not seem like a tech support issue so moved to main forum. If the community agrees it's likely to be a bug, post in Bug Reports please.

Was this game started under the 1.7.x patches? or some earlier one?

Can you start and play a new test campaign now alright?

I agree, and the developers are looking into that. Until then the only known workaround is to update MacOS.

Both your Intel and nVidia video drivers date from 2016, and the game is crashing in your nVidia driver.

For the Intel one check with Alienware/Dell, failing that Intel themselves:

If that save you mention reliably triggers this crash, please make a new thread in Bug Reports and attach it there, for QA to look into.

Sorry for that problem!

The moment I open task manager the explorer.exe process reduces cpu usage from 30% to 0% and CK3 immediately starts working as expected.
Goodness me! No real idea why that would be, aside from my speculations from before
