Unfortunately I am unable to update as I do not have administrator privileges on this device. It may be a while before the organisation decides to update systems. Thank you for the assistance though.
Sorry about that! 2022.12 came out the other day but I don't think this was fixed in that update.

Right click on ck3.exe , properties, compatibility. Tick "disable fullScreen optimisations" untick every other box in that dialog, Apply and exit.
Then in the launcher Game Settings menu, select fullScreen display mode, Vsync off, refresh rate 60.

IF that doesn't help, Please go here:

Ah, okay, that would explain it! If you have a save game from that campaign which has NOT been updated and written by a later patch, you should revert to 1.5.x in the Steam Betas tab to finish that campaign.

Try each of those mods one at a time to see which one is doing it.

Well, I'm just passing on what a user found helped them, I can't actually do this myself as I don't have the problem!

What do you see in the Xbox app?

I have seen that app make things worse. If you unload it entirely before starting the game, do you still get this?

I see some crashes in GPUTweakII.exe in there, which is apparently an ASUS utility. Please unload that before starting the game too.

If those don't help, please install and run the free utility Speccy. Send its output to a text file and attach that here , thanks.

Did you mean to post this in bug Reports, perhaps?

I'm not quite sure of your answer; what game version was that save game you put in your OP here started under? 1.6.x, or 1.7.x ?

Can you start and play a new test campaign now alright?

One trick is to rename one of its parent folders, then run a Steam verify against the game to rebuild it.

This may be a bug in the launcher, which seems to require MacOS 12 now. Were you at all thinking of updating MacOS? If so please do that and confirm for me that it helps, then I can report that to the developers.

Please set each of these .exe file to run as the Windows Admin user:

dowser.exe (in the Steam CK3/launcher folder)
C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2.2022.11/paradox launcher.exe
C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/bootstrapper-v2.exe

That should fix that permisisons error we see in there!

Please do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-CK3
- unsubscribe from ALL mods in the Steam workshop for this game
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/CK3 AND Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3 folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add CK3.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
- start the game with no mods active and test

In particular make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam CK3 or Documents CK3 locations, before installing again.

If that goes okay, you can subscribe to mods again - but ONLY those known to be updated to work with the 1.7.2 patch.

Good luck!

I assume you mean screenshots 4, 6.

So running ck3.exe gets you 1.7.2 or 1.7.0?

If the latter we need to fix your launcher issue so Steam updates you. Please try this:

- uninstall Paradox Launcher v2 from the Windows "Apps and features" utility, if still present.

Delete the following folders if still present:

- C:/users/{userName}/AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users/{userName}/AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users/{userName}/AppData/Roaming/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer.

- exit the Steam app entirely
- run steam.exe as the Windows Admin user

- run the game from the PLAY button in Steam

IF that doesn't help, in this folder are some .log files:
C:/users/{userName}/AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
Please attach them here. ... Read more

I'm afraid I'm unfamiliar with how those things work.

This in our launcher, or the game, or both?

If you have not opted into any beta version in Steam, it will always install the current version, being 1.7.2 ... ?!?

The current version ara checksum are 1.7.2 [ba42]; is that what you see in the main game menu? If not probably one of your mods has changed it, OR you have implemented debug mode.

In the former case, Please do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-CK3
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/CK3 AND Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3 folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add CK3.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
- start the game with no mods active and test

Sorry, a brainfade on my part - the game always runs in openGL on MacOS.

However I see this Mac only has an Intel video system, which is probably contributing to the problem, minimum requirements are:

Graphics:ATI Radeon HD 6750 / NVIDIA GeForce 320 / NVIDIA GeForce 9600 or higher, 1024MB graphics memory required

But why it is so much worse than the 1.33.x patches i do not know, I don't think that's the general experience. Have you tried reducing the game resolution and graphics quality settings?

I don't know offhand what else could cause this to you , I am sorry.

In Windows run msconfig , boot, advanced. If Number of Processors is ticked there, untick it and reboot.

Assuming that doesn't help, what if you exit the Steam app entirely then run stellaris.exe directly from File Explorer? Is that any better?

And we had one case recently where running Task Manager helped performance, weirdly!

Lots of errors in that log, as you can see, including some problem mods.

Please do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-CK3
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/CK3 AND Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3 folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add CK3.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
- start the game with no mods active and test

In particular make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam CK3 or Documents CK3 locations, before installing again.

Does that make any difference?

If you are running our launcher in standalone mode, you'll be using an old game version 1.6.1 as this game is no longer being updated in that platform.

My question was about running the Steam installation of ck3.exe directly from File Explorer, not from our launcher. That will be version 1.7.2 .
