The Epic games have encapsulated launchers which don't need to update, the message is probably bogus. Can you play okay ?

Can your friend play this game with some third person without this issue?

Any chance you can try it via a VPN? Or from a different machine or even from a different network?

Has this always happened ever since you've had the game? Or only since when?

Does anything like that happen with HOI4 or CK2?

DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7 or later). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/Stellaris/settings.txt and pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox/Stellaris/logs/ folder, attach system.log , error.log .

Please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU)
1/ before starting the game up and
2/ after say 10 minutes' play.
If your PC's vendor has given you no way of reading temperatures, install

Please try this:

- exit the Steam app entirely
- uninstall Paradox Launcher v2 from the Windows "Apps and features" utility, if still present.

Delete the following folders if still present:

- C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users//AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users//AppData/Roaming/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer.

- run steam.exe as the Windows Admin user

- run the game from the PLAY button in Steam

IF that doesn't help, in this folder are some .log files:
C:/users//AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
Please attach them here.

Note that you can run stellaris.exe directly from Windows Explorer, which bypasses the launcher.

We now have reports of this on AVG, Avast and possibly Kaspersky.

You need to make sure all these apps are in its exceptions lists:

dowser.exe (in the Steam HOI4 folder)
C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2.2020.16/paradox launcher.exe
C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/bootstrapper-v2.exe

Good luck!

I think that VC++ 2015 needs further updating. Please go here:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads And run the x86 and x64 installers there.

If that doesn't help, strangely the nVidia driver only got updated to the second-newest one from November, not the latest December one. You might try a clean reinstall of it:

- uninstall the nVidia driver and all nVidia software
- reboot
- install the December one from here:

It's hard to see how removing the CK3 Gamepass edition had any effect on the launcher or other games, I suspect that was coincidence. It has its own installation of the launcher completely separate from the common one that our Steam games use.

So with the Steam games neither the launcher nor the games work, is that right? Running ck3.exe , hoi4.exe directly from Windows Explorer fail? Because that bypasses the launcher.

What happens with the launcher now? Do yu see it okay? Does it show version 2020.16 or something else?

Flubiliu said: . I still got an error message about "saving mod load order failing" and that I should make sure that the launcher has access to my documents folder... ok... BUT the game started and seems playable.
That means your Windows User Documents folder. I don't know Avast in detail but you'll need to make sure it allows the game and launcher to write to those folders.

Good luck!

Does the workaround in that thread for EU4 not work for Stellaris for you? It really should.

For the code update question, please post in the Bug Reports forum if it's not there already. Thanks!

Il legionario said: also when i try to run the application from the steam folder i get error 0xc000007b
That usually means a missing or bad Windows DLL. What happened when you ran those 4 MS installers above? Any error or problem with any of them?

Your antivirus app is getting in the way of the launcher and the game writing out its settings files.
[18:33:14][pdx_assert.cpp:568]: Assertion failed: pdx_settings.txt permission denied
[18:33:14][virtualfilesystem_physfs.cpp:1574]: Could not open file: pdx_settings.txt, error: pdx_settings.txt permission denied
[18:33:14][pdx_text_settings.cpp:154]: Could not write settings: Could not open file: pdx_settings.txt
Which one do you use?

Unfortunately with the Gampass edition, adding exceptions to AV apps is a little tricky as you can't navigate directly to the game's folders, Microsoft lock them down pretty hard.

Well there you go - that's definitely the problem here! Anything over 80c is a worry. You'll need to get the machine cleaned out.

This happened to both my wife and I this year, we had to take our iMacs to a shop to get cleaned out - dropped the temps by like 20c!

I do not know what the status of this issue is with QA or the developers, I'm sorry. I'm just an external technical support contractor on the other side of the world!

If you have a saved game that reliably shows this, please make a new thread in Bug Reports and attach it there - can't hurt!

It's not a known problem with the game on Big Sur, no - we'd certainly know by now if it affected every MacOS 11 user that way!

Most MacBooks only have an Intel video system, which is not supported hardware for this game. If that's what yours has, probably best to seek that refund.

If however your machine has an AMD video system as well, then this should definitely not be happening!

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/Stellaris/settings.txt and pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox/Stellaris/logs/ folder, attach system.log , error.log

Also in Steam please click on Steam-Help-System Info, and paste everything there into a text file and attach that here.

BUT keep an eye on the "You've Played" number for this game in Steam - if it gets near 2 hours STOP and seek that refund as Steam will not refund after that point.

I've seen this driver crash our games before:
Stack Trace:
1 EZFRD64.DLL DllCanUnloadNow (+ 9268)
You should unplug whatever device it is running, if possible, and seek an update for that driver from that vendor.

If as you say the game runs fine with no mods active, then I'm afraid this must be a mod problem which we here cannot help with. As there are multiple mods involved probably best to start a new thread in the User Mods forum and attach your list of mods and an affected saved game there.

Good luck with that!
