Our game worlds were subjected to a sustained attack. We've had to temporarily add some restrictions when logging into the game or world-hopping repeatedly to help mitigate such attacks. If you're unable to login to the game as a result of these restrictions we recommend waiting a short period of time before trying again.

I appreciate that this isn't the most helpful advice - and it might prove frustrating even (and I apologise) - I can only suggest allowing a period of time before attempting to login again.

Just to clarify what is meant by the last entry:

22:30 GMT: You should be able to log in again (though the same login and world hopping restrictions detailed above do still apply). This article won't be updated overnight, however if any issues emerge then rest assured that there is 24/7 coverage in place to escalate and resolve issues which arise. We'll update this article over the weekend as is needed.

The article and our social channels may not get updated as the out-of-hours escalation procedures are centred around the teams who monitor the game and the teams who actually do the fixing.

We don't reset account progress, and if you can see the account you'd like to login to on the hiscores you are almost certainly logging in using the wrong login credentials. I'd eat my hat if it's not the case. I'm wearing my New Era Vikings cap, and it'd be most unpleasant.

I'd recommend the following.

  1. Head to the Can't Log In? page: https://support.runescape.com/hc/en-gb/articles/360001552065
  2. Say No.
  3. Say Email My Login.
  4. Enter your commonly-used email address (it'll email a list of any logins you use that are linked to that email address).

Edit: legacy/email accounts receive a 1 minute login error to your login server as well. continued edit... I'd check your DC or failover to another logon server.

We published the cause of the issue in the post. It's unrelated to anything our side. Our worlds were enduring an attack.

Using VPNs isn't against the rules.

We might take the initiative and lock your account if it seems like it's being hijacked (as IP changes might suggest).

Your IP changing whilst logged in will usually result in your account being logged out. So you'd probably want to avoid very dangerous content.

Two things.

Get your email secure.
Usually an insecure email account is the cause of a hijacking. Change the password for it, enable 2FA, and check activity logs.

Get your RuneScape account secure.
