While temper tantrums are bad, I remember a time when developers didn't fill their game to the brim with micro transactions and monetization tactics. They cared about the games, not only the money. This is free to play, so micro transactions (cosmetic only, as they are in Apex) are acceptable. But I don't like when developers default to "ass-hat gamers". There needs to be blame on both sides, not just gamers and not just developers. People are understandably upset when developers are trying their best to squeeze money out of their players.

Anyways, I do appreciate the update and transparency, I do not appreciate shifting the blame back to "ass-hat gamers".

I worked my ass off on Titanfall 2 - and complete package that also provided awesome post-launch support with a ton of free (and yes, some paid) content and the ass-hattery was still there. No, I'm not trying to paint all players with a huge brush - I'm commenting on the fact that nowadays its just easier and less stressful to not post anywhere if you're a dev. That sucks.

I know. It honestly sucks that people hate you guys. You are amazing, you are clear, you are some badass game devs. But there will always be toxicity. Its unavoidable nowadays. You dont get the praise you deserve for making an incredible game, you instead get complaints about said games flaws, in a truly horrible fashion. Im genuinely sorry for you guys. Just keep up the good work even if you have to trudge through 100 toxic people. 100 caustic gas traps. 100 wattson fences. Know that there will always be people looking to pick up your banner if you fall. Good luck with the future of Apex Legends. I look forward to what is next.

Hey - hate on us if we do something stupid. No one here was ???cOnFuSeD??? when we don't live up to our expectations. Just give us the opportunity to make changes and do the right thing, thats all. Also, don't be a dick. It was quite the treat to wake up on Wednesday to a parade of awful Tweets because someone posted an old quote of mine here. Devs are people too, ya know.

If your goal was to provide choice on how players can get items, you would have done something other than "well people can buy 1 pack for $7 or 10 packs for $70 good choice"

See above reply to /u/FinallyNewShoes and get out of here with that nonsense. We're open and honest and doing the best we can. If you want to think we're bloodsucking money grubbing fools then I guess whatever - but don't spread FUD.

Get out of here with that nonsense. I've replied to enough of these - go look at those replies for reality.

Being that we are (IMO) incredibly generous with the amount of free stuff we give out, including Legendary Skins, yes. There is a pricepoint for any product that the market will bare and we're definitely in the neighborhood with other games.

I know for a fact I would buy skins at lower prices ($5-10 depending), but $18 for a character skin that I don't even see seems a bit much. Buying 4 skins would be more than paying a full MSRP ($60) for a game.

There is a wealth of data available on how monetization works in free-to-play games, and we ourselves have run tests by putting skins on sale in the store. The amount of people who spend is crazy low, most of ya'll are freeloaders (and we love that!) and a change in price doesn't move the needle.

Dude, lol

Don't bullshit us

You have no idea how this industry works, what development costs, or how companies operate. Please don't call me a bullsh*tter.

They didn't respond quickly because people were blowing $200 to get the skins they want and heirloom. Once they saw a drop in the amount of people buying they made the announcement.

Jeez, whats with the conspiracy theories? This event has been quite the success, and I can't say that any clearer. We're making changes that will most likely reduce revenue, but we're doing it because its the right thing to do.

But the complaints and such were a factor, right?

The reality is that anytime we add something to the game that costs money there is negative feedback. People just want free stuff. We knew that was coming - but what we hadn't fully appreciated was the bond we broke. My comment was in reference to /u/Billyxmac saying we would lose a huge amount of players. By looking at graphs we did the exact right with Iron Crown, but looking at our hearts shows we dun goofed.

I mean I was able to understand it. It's just that part of your "messaging" issue is you're talking to us about a video game like this is a Human Resources Convention.

Well, posts like this do go through about 28 people before they get posted, so... apologies?

Uh, thats kind of what I've said?

All 30 event items (the 24 in the Packs and the 6 in the Event Shop) are "Event Limited" which means they will return at a future date. We're don't have an exact date atm, but "Event Limited" items are eligible to return 6 months after their release.

To answer your question further down - these music packs won't be in S3 Battle Pass. We try to make Battle Pass all fresh new content (with the exception of the core Apex Packs rewards).

$20 is a lot better then gambling with those Crown Packs. They listened, they heard, and hopefully the next event will be improved. Atleast they are communicating with us. Probably why they didn't respond so quickly because of so much backlash. I like Respawn. I respect them. Thanks for the update!

We've said it before, but we will not engage with temper tantrums, and personal attacks or virtriolic threads are completely unacceptable. We took a look in the mirror this week (lol - thanks for all the attacks guys) and decided we hadn't met up obligations and are making changes because we believe in our approach.

I've been in the industry long enough to remember when players weren't complete ass-hats to developers and it was pretty neat. I forged a bunch of long lasting relationships from back then. Would be awesome to get back there, and not engaging with toxic people or asking "how high" when a mob screams "jump" is hopefully a start.

Not sure if this is what you mean - but in reality the Iron Crown event has been a success, both with revenue and player engagement. Our numbers are up across the board.

This was not a decision made in any way other than to fix the broken promise we made to everyone at launch about providing choice on how players can get items. This doesn't mean every item is available for grind or purchase or Apex Pack - but providing ONLY Apex Packs for the Iron Crown skins was a misstep on our part.

Messaging for Expectations?

What in the name of Corporate Buzzwords is this?
"We need our Apex players to think outside the box, to find synergy, for our stakeholders."

Happy to clarify - all the messaging about Iron Crown before it launched failed to talk at all about how to obtain the skins we were showing off, and based off previous events being a different structure and scope the whiplash of seeing the Iron Crown event did not help anything. In general, just trying to say that we know we did not communicate clearly enough what to expect, and we will do better on that in the future.

As mentioned in-game and on the PlayApex.com post about the Iron Crown event - we were planning on putting these skins in the store eventually (think months, not weeks), but putting them in the store during the event was not on the table.

Call it what you want - but we didn't hold to our promise we set early on and are doing what we can to make it right. As for skin pricing, we have run promotions on skins and have found an almost zero uplift on sales numbers. The reality is that the percentage of people who actually purchase items is incredibly low and price changes do not have enough of an affect to change that. We run analytics and stats all the time to ensure we're riding the right balance, so I'm not saying price points can't change in the future - but for the time being the change we're making is to provide the Iron Crown Legendary skins in the rotating store so that the Apex Packs aren't the only way to obtain those skins.

You must understand that. They need to create revenue from these events.

This.

We'd love it if the universe allowed a way for us to provide every piece of content for free, but until that happens we're going to have to charge for some portions of the stuff we make. We continue to put a hardline stance on anything gameplay related, though, and will not require players to buy anything that affects gameplay.
