We'll leave that to other games that do things like provide methods to pay for power. We are not a hugely monetizing game - we just need to make enough money to keep the game going and make more stuff for everyone. When we decided to make Apex Legends a free-to-play game it was imperative that free-only players still can get access to all gameplay while also having the chance at earning the coolest looking cosmetics.

There's a whole host of decisions that get made for any event - and this event was designed differently. We screwed up by not providing agency to you guys in how you obtain cool stuff. We didn't uphold our end of the deal that we set out with at launch, so changes are coming.

Edit: what happened to all those posts talking about exactly this?

Hell no. We're humans, you know, and we will make mistakes.

Hey everyone,

At launch we made a promise to players that we intend to do monetization in a way that felt fair and provided choice to players on how they spent their money and time. A core decision during development of Apex Legends was that we wanted to make a world class battle royale game - in quality, depth, progression, and important for today’s conversation - how we sell stuff. With the Iron Crown event we missed the mark when we broke our promise by making Apex Packs the only way to get what many consider to be the coolest skins we’ve released*.*

We’ve heard you and have spent a lot of time this week discussing the feedback and how we structure events in the future, as well as changes that we will make to Iron Crown. To get right into it, here are the changes we are making:

  • Starting on 8/20, we’ll be adding and rotating all twelve of the event-exclusive Legendary items into the store over the course of the final week of the event fo...

For yall to fix the footstep audio.

Instead you gave us a death recap.

Booooooooooooooo

I get what you're saying, but those aren't mutually exclusive. The UX and Design people who built death recap took nothing away from anyone working on footstep audio issues.

If we weren't careful, features could steal (say) QA time that's needed elsewhere, but we're careful to not abuse resources like that. =)

It says "Coming in future patch". Which is true! It doesn't say "next patch".

I'm honestly sorry that there was misunderstanding. Maybe we need something that more clearly says "on the way, but not the very next update". We definitely don't want to give the wrong impression.

There are definitely new features (death recap, solos mode, and more).

But re: auto-run: It was not “supposed to be in this patch”. It’s coming. Likely next patch, but we never promise until we 100% know for sure, because unexpected issues happen all the time. But yes. The internal work has been done, it wasn’t done in time for today’s update’s deadline, but fingers-crossed it’ll be baked into the next one.

Edit: The blog originally said the quoted. I'm sure that's why the post got deleted and fixed.

Correct dates are from 16-19 👍

For a full breakdown of the Event and FAQ check out the blog here.

TL;DR - The Event includes:

  • Limited Time Mode - Solos
    • We are finally dipping our toes into the Solo waters. We’re going to put it out there and see what happens. Too early to say if this will become permanent or not - healthy matchmaking across all modes is priority. Give it a shot and let us know what you think.
  • Octane Town Takeover
    • New Town on Kings Canyon
  • Double XP for Top 5 & Wins Weekend
    • From 10am PST on August 16th through 10...

Prediction Error

Basically, the servers distribute information about all players and their actions to all connected players of a match. But it takes a while for the data to reach each player, so in the meantime, the client machines "predict" what each of those other players is going to do. if [enemy] is running in a straight line, it's very likely that they will keep running in a straight line, so your machine can animate [enemy] running even if it doesn't know where [enemy] is.

However, if the server has difficulty providing enough updates at high enough speed, your machine will be "starved" of information and realize it is very likely going to draw enemies in wrong positions. For instance, if the server cannot push packets every 50 ms for whatever reason, but only every 150 ms, that's a lot of time during which enemies are routinely going to change direction or do something unexpected. This makes it harder to hit enemies, because you are firing a...

You're not describing prediction. Apex predicts only your clients actions and nothing more. You are describing extrapolation.

You fire your gun. Your client predicts it can fire [you're not dead yet], the shot's trajectory [you weren't dead when firing, nor shot and had no flinch], and hits a target / sprays blood from flesh [you weren't dead, no flinch, and trajectory intersected target from last server-snapshot's interpolation]. All of these -- your client's actions -- are predicted.

Where can mispredictions occur in the above?

  1. You died before firing; you will have mispredicted a shot coming out of your gun.
  2. You were shot before firing and could be in the middle of a flinch; you will mispredict your shot's trajectory.
  3. Some other moving object intersects your shot's trajectory (eg. teammate or deployable).
  4. Any of the above can cause hit FX (eg. blood / audio) to predict wrong.

When you shoot, it follows its tr...

On 8/13 we'll be trying out a Solos Mode in Apex for a limited time. We'll talk more about Solos when it's live and you've had a chance to play it. For now we're going to put it out there and see what happens and what kind of feedback we get.

More to come on 8/13!

Yes. We've pushed features/other networking fixes to focus on this. We have this as no. 1 priority. Every patch, both server and client, have had things int the background to help us figure this Sh*t out. This issue has been really frustrating for a lot of people here.
