What distro?

Has it always happened, or used to be okay at some point?

Have you checked with the mod authors, maybe they have a problem on Linux only?

I cannot explain that, it makes no sense really. I'm pretty sure you have a problem outside the game in some way, although quite what I cannot see as yet.

I notice this in that dxdiag:

If the game runs the logs do have to be somewhere. Did you try searching for, say, system.log , error.log or exceptions.log?

I'm not sure what you can be referring to really. The only two folders the game uses are the ones I listed in post #5 above - if you deleted both those folders that's as clean as it gets!

You can test your new theory by installing our non-Steam client (aka launcher v1):

In the game's launcher, game settings, now set the game to fullScreen mode. Disable Vsync then set the refresh rate cap to 60.

Does thet help?

That's not the Ransomware screen, that's the firewall - a completely unrelated function. Firewalls only govern external communications, they have nothing to do with file system access.

In the Windows search box enter Ransomware. Enable Controlled Folder access if disabled, then go into the Apps Allowed Through section. THAT is where those three .exe files need to be added as exceptions.

Good luck with that!

GundamMerc said: The only thing left to do is perhaps try downloading the game directly from here and just bypass any steam shenanigans that is preserving whatever file is causing this every time.
I doubt very much this is anything to do with Steam, but you can simply test that by running ck3.exe directly from File Explorer.

Me either, but I don't get most of them in my vanilla game. Probably worthwhile to do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-CK3
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/CK3 AND Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3 folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add CK3.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
- start the game with no mods active and test

In particular make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam CK3 or Documents CK3 locations, before installing again.

That's because they all use the same installation of the same launcher.

Can i please see a screenshot of the Ransomware screen where you've put in those exemptions? Thanks!

FYI I also run MacOS 12.0.1 and do not see this issue.

That makes sense as they use the same installation of the same launcher.

A new launcher 2021.10 came out last night so lets try a clean reinstall of it. Please delete the ~/Library/Application Support/Paradox Interactive/ folder. To see it go to the Finder, hit command-shift-G (ie Go To) and paste in ~/Library/Application Support/ . Then run the game from the PLAY Button in Steam, to reinstall the la... Read more

I see you have a problem mod called out in that file, are any mods at all enabled in this campaign?

You can limit frame rate, but not GPU % as such. Believe me we'd know if this was happening to everyone!

In the game settings in the launcher set it to fullScreen, vsync off, and refresh rate cap to say 60.

If that doesn't help you may need to use GeForce Experience to do that.

PwincessUnicorn said: Has there been a fix yet, its been 13 months.
The problem is far less prevalent than before, various game and server-end fixes have helped a lot. But there are still a few affected users, clearly.

In most cases there's also been slow or unreliable internet involved, is that the situation here?

Disabling AV apps does not shut them down completely. Which one do you use?

You added all three of those .exe files to all its exceptions lists?

That sounds like overheating then. In the game's settings turn Vsync off, then set Maximum FPS to 60.

If that doesn't help, please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU)
1/ before starting the game up and
2/ after say 30 minutes' play.
If your PC's vendor has given you no way of reading temperatures, install

Please Add CK3.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.

You should add steam.exe and C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2.2021.9/paradox launcher.exe to that list.

All the best!

Has this always happened since you've had the game? or only since when?

Does it happen right from game/galaxy start? Or only in mid or late game, or only after playing for a while?

Does it affect our similar games like Stellaris and EU4?

Please attach here your Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/logs/ folder, attach here system.log , error.log

Ah, you said it was a new machine, so it won't be old thermal paste then. You might need to get the hardware checked out, maybe they even omitted it?
