Odd how the cap is at 60hz, and that is all your desktop is at, yet the framerate shows in there at 144 as you say.

What actual fps do you see in the game itself?

Please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU)
1/ before starting the game up and
2/ after say 10 minutes' play.
If your PC's vendor has given you no way of reading temperatures, install

I don't see why the launcher is failing to update to 2023.9 but it seems to be at 2023.8.1 at least - is that the version you see?

But that should have nothing to do with your ability to play this game MP. What exactly is happening there?

And, we're back to getting the DX11 and Vram errors again. This is weird!

In our launcher, game settings, set the renderer to Vulkan rather than DX11 - does the game get any further then?

I see you have Mcafee AV - while not known to be a problem, make sure ck3.exe is in all its exceptions lists.

If that doesn't help, try this Windows repair tool:

I missed that - don't do that, it causes problems all by itself.

Please set the frame rate cap to 60, as I mentioned before.

It's an option in Steam-Preferences-In Game.

Right click on ck3.exe , properties, compatibility. Tick "disable fullScreen optimisations" untick every other box in that dialog, Apply and exit.
Then in the launcher Game Settings menu, select fullScreen display mode, Vsync off, cap refresh rate at 60.

If those don't help:
DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach here your Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/logs/ folder, attach here system.log , error.log , exceptions.log

I should have said before - please unload GeForce Experience while we work on this, if it is running or loading automatically.

The framerate cap still shows as Off there - are you setting it to 60 but that is not 'taking' or what's happening there? What actual fps are you seeing before the game crashes?

That error log shows some serious DirectX 11 and video memory errors, not sure why with your hardware. Go into the nVidia Control Panel, Manage 3D settings. Force ck3.exe to use the AMD Radeon graphics option instead of the nVidia card, does the game start up then?

You don't seem to have done this, from that settings file. Please try it!

AND delete that empty system.log file - does it make a new one with stuff in it?

If still a problem, run ck3.exe directly from File Explorer - if it fails then do you get a Windows error shown?

AND install and run the free utility Speccy. Send its output to a text file and attach that here please.

I didn't suggest that, did I? Just making a new Windows user. Perhaps an alternative would be to disable all startup items in your existing Windows user and reboot.

Fan speed is not directly under the control of games or any app of course; if it runs faster than you think it should for a given temperature that must be a driver, Windows or hardware problem. Why only those two games I have no idea!

While those GPU and CPU temps are a little lower than the threshold to cause such issues (80c IME) they are up there and I think too high. Can you try the steps I mentioned last time?

Well, as I say we can clearly see crashes in core Windows components in that dxdiag. They may or may not be serious, I don't know, but it's not a good look!

Of course I don't ever suggest anything that cannot possibly help, but If you don't want to try my diagnostic steps, that is your right of course.

Please do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-CK3
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/CK3 AND Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3 folders - In particular make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam CK3 or Documents CK3 locations, before installing again.
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add CK3.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.

THEN Right click on ck3.exe , properties, compatibility. Tick "disable fullScreen optimisations" untick every other box in that dialog, Apply and exit.
Then in the launcher Game Settings menu, select fullScreen display mode, Vsync off, cap refresh rate at 60.

I'm not sure I understand - you are saying you get crashes in msiexec.exe yet it is not in use? It is definitely not running? That will be unrelated to this game as such of course, it doesn't use msiexec.exe , only our launcher does.

But now we see crashes in svchost.exe and sppsvc.exe as well - core parts of Windows. Would you say you are having problems in Windows or on this computer aside from this game?

Make a new Windows user on this machine and log into it with that. Test with a new campaign there, do you get the same problem?

If you are getting overheating at 60hz there is a definitely a cooling issue here. What actual CPU and GPU temperatures are you seeing at that time?

If you see near or over 80c:
Clean out all air vents it has (compressed air cans are good for this). Make sure airflow to them is not blocked by anything like walls, books or whatever.
If that doesn't drop the temps enough, you probably have a faulty fan or a heatsink/thermal paste problem. You may need professional help at that point.

Good luck!

Sorry, yes, my error - msiexec.exe is indeed a MS utility, nothing to do with MSI as such.

However it should not be running unless you are in the process of installing something. You can kill it in Task Manager-processes quite safely at other times.

Whether that is related to your issue suspected with the Windows updates I'm not sure!

That settings file shows the cap at 144, not 60. I have seen some cases recently where nVidia only supports 144hz, is that what happens here? You set it to 60 but it changes to 144?

What actual fps do you get in the game?
