That sounds like a bug, although having it happen in two games in a row is pretty bad and unexpected! You are not even using any cosmetic mds in this campaign?

If so best to make a new thread in Bug Reports and post the save there.

As far as fixing the save file goes, that's beyond me. The redoubtable @grotaclas can sometimes help in that regard, otherwise the good folks in User Mods may be able to.

Sorry for that problem!

Ah, that is usually an antivirus app getting in the way. What antivirus app do you use? You need to make sure all these apps are in its exceptions lists:

eu4.exe and dowser.exe (in the Steam EU4 folder)
C:/users/{username}/AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2.2023.5/paradox launcher.exe
C:/users/{username}/AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/bootstrapper-v2.exe

IF that doesn't help, also set each of those .exe files (EXCEPT eu4.exe !) to run as the Windows Admin user.

Then the game should run from Steam/our launcher, and enable all the DLCs.

Please try this:

- uninstall Paradox Launcher v2 from the Windows "Apps and features" utility, if still present.

Delete the following folders if still present:

- C:/users/{userName}/AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users/{userName}/AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users/{userName}/AppData/Roaming/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer.

- exit the Steam app entirely
- run steam.exe as the Windows Admin user
- run the game from the PLAY button in Steam
OR
- exit the Epic app entirely
- run EpicGamesLauncher.exe as the Windows Admin user
- run the game from the Epic client

IF that doesn't help, in this folder are some .log files:
C:/users/{userName}/AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
Please attach them here.

Note that you can run eu4.ex... Read more

Sorry, but despite supporting this game since release I don't know the answer to any of your questions.

As a general principle though, games do not give you direct access to functions such as a way to control amount of AI calculations. Your best hope in that regard is a mod to affect such things.

That shows this is indeed a firewall issue somewhere - either within Windows, your internet router/modem, or your ISP.

If you use the Windows Defender firewall, eu4.exe needs to be in its Public and Private exception lists.

Otehrwise it's probably time to contact your ISP, especially if they supplied your modem.

The failure to verify that DLC is indeed a cosmetic error which will be fixed in the next game patch. Everyone gets it, including me.

Why it does not appear in your game is a mystery, it works fine for me and most others. What if you make a new Windows user and log into it with that - does it still happen there?

If so, how about on any other machine you can install it on, as a diagnostic test?

You have an AV app Panda Dome that I've not come across before. Do make sure eu4.exe is in all its exceptions lists, and it is not doing realtime scans of the the Steam/SteamApps/common/Eu4 AND Documents/Paradox Interactive/Eu4 folders.

Disable the Discord overlay.

I hope one of those does it, as I don't see anything else to cause this to you!

Please install and run the free utility Speccy. Send its output to a text file and attach that here please.

You could also try unloading GeForce Experience before starting the game.

I see, I'm now quite confident that led to your problem!

No. dxdiag.txt is just to give me info on your hardware and Windows setup, it doesn't actually fix anything.

I don't know then. Let's try making this file:
~\AppData\Local\Programs\Paradox Interactive\launcher-v2.2023.4.1\steam_appid.txt
even though it should not actually need to be in that location.

Just make it in Notepad as a plain text file, and in it place the game's Steam ID:

Do you see the Attach Files button, below left of these text fields?

We don't see any crashes in eu4.exe in that dxdiag; one AppHang is all. I ran that save hands-off for a few game years with no problem at all.

You say it crashes every month, is that when autosaves are happening? If so this maybe your antivirus getting in the way. Make sure eu4.exe is in all its exceptions lists.

Wow, that's pretty bad. I have no idea what could cause that, I'm sorry, except you'd think it would have to be a game bug.

What I suggest for the future is you make a manual copy of the save file just before or after each play session, so you have something intact to revert to.

Only that I have seen no new reports since then, so I thought it had been fixed by a launcher or other update.

You ought to be on 2023.4.1 now, is that right?

That file is entirely blank I'm afraid, so there's no rescuing it.

Not sure why it has Backup in it, but is there any other save you can revert to?

I see a similar report here now:

What keyboard layout do you use? Does that workaround work for you?

TeutonicTortoise said: Ive heard somewhere someone mention firewalls being related and ive allowed EU4 to be an exception but not sure if that covers the launcher.
It does not, they are separate apps.

eu4.exe and dowser.exe (in the Steam EU4 folder)
C:/users/{username}/AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2.2023.4.1/paradox launcher.exe
C:/users/{username}/AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/bootstrapper-v2.exe
