I don’t know the cause so I don’t have a way to prevent. You can manually backup your characters periodically to make sure it’s recent.

Hey, sorry you didn’t get a reply last time. When we get within a couple weeks of a patch, we get spread a little thin. We don’t have a good solution for you to recover the characters quickly. Likely what is happening is the game can’t properly read the save file and is hiding them so you don’t try to load a character that will fail to load. It’s possible that it is related to the loot filter setup if that is vanishing at the same time. There are several changes to character saving/loading and the loot filter back end that will come with 0.8.0. I’m not sure if they will fix this or not but that’s about the best option I have for you at the moment.
Identity theft is no joke
Not a bad looking image! I fixed it up a bit for you;

I am sorry, but I have to contradict you here.
We have said we would release Patch 0.8 on December 4th, however we never stated that this patch would include multiplayer as we had never planned for that to be the case. Similarly, we neither released, nor planned to release, a patch in November - and so it would never have been possible for us to enable multiplayer at that time, as doing so would require an update.
The Early Access Forecast was not changed to say it was updated...

I’ve managed to reproduce this on a laptop running Ubuntu 20.04, so that shouldn’t be necessary. I apprecate the offer, and we’ll try to get a fix implemented in time for Friday’s patch.
The affix effect modifiers are based on item type so it’s the same ratio for each affix. You’ll notice that both of those examples are 1.8x bigger for 2h.
Thank you for your post!
I’m going to move this thread to #bug-reports. I believe what is causing this is that, immediately after character creation, we play a Character Intro video which is class-specific. We previously had this working on Linux - I personally validated that on Ubuntu, Manjaro, and Solus - however it sounds like the videos are now failing to play on Linux. Apologies for the inconvenience.
Welcome Traveler, to the Temple of Eterra!
The Temple of Eterra once acted as Eterra’s seat of power before it fell from the sky and shattered the ground below. The temple is now quiet, filled only with ancient mysteries.
In the Ancient Era, this temple floated in the air, moored to the ground by massive chains. Eterra’s grace kept the temple in the sky until the day she went dormant.
The earliest shreds of humanity’s history in the world of Eterra recall the first people waking from their slumber in the halls of the temple and walking out into the shattered land around them.
Humanity emerged from the broken temple guided by the gods who spoke to them of Eterra’s love and mercy even as the doors to the anc...
