No, Steam will apply the latest version automatically. Use the technique that @ThatDaniel mentioned instead.

Please try this:

- exit the Steam app entirely
- uninstall Paradox Launcher v2 from the Windows "Apps and features" utility, if still present.

Delete the following folders if still present:

- C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users//AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users//AppData/Roaming/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer.

- run steam.exe as the Windows Admin user

- run the game from the PLAY button in Steam

IF that doesn't help, in this folder are some .log files:
C:/users//AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
Please attach them here.

Note that you can run stellaris.exe directly from Windows Explorer, which bypasses the launcher.

It is something to do with certain nVidia setups in WIndows 10, we never figured out the root cause. It has come and gone a few times since it first started about 2 years ago.

Fortunately borderless is functionally equivalent to fullScreen; indeed some games don't even have a fullScreen mode any more.

Odd then how they helped them but not you! What output did you see from those two commands?

@Shoshin I wonder if you have any further thoughts on this?

Did you try the steps in the post above yours?

09richardk said: Yes. I can't imagine how or why the correct game files weren't downloaded after my fresh install, especially.
To be clear, you did manually extract the three files from the .zip I linked and move them to the Steam-Stellaris folder? So they overwrote the ones that Steam put there?

This is an issue on recent MacOS versions I"m afraid, not all resolutions display properly.

Open up the file documents/paradox/stellaris/logs/system.log , at the end of that are the supported resolutions for your hardware. One that should always work is your Mac's desktop resolution; for others listed there you just have to try them to see which ones work okay on your setup - usually about half of them. You may find that switching to borderless or windowed mode helps too.

Sorry for that problem!

Now you are only on launcher 2020.3 when 2020.13 is the current one. How that is possible using the 2020.13 installer files I linked for you above I cannot see. Are you confident you got the three files in the right place, they overwrote the three older ones?

Those logs go back 10 days so I'm afraid you can't have gone through my process above. In addition it's still using an old installer somehow, plus some other weird problems:
2020-10-18 17:05:05 [launcher] [ERROR] Couldn't start the launcher:

Check your computer's system information to see whether you need a x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher.

Certainly, but I need to be 100% sure you've done every step of the process I've devised for launcher issues.

FYI this is not a known issue with the launcher. What could break it between one time it runs and the next time I'm really not sure.

Did you read my bit about the launcher logs? If I can get those next time the problem happens please.

That's an odd situation, you'd think if that was a bug we'd have more reports of this.

Can you try doing a test installation on any other machine? Just to see if it's a problem on this machine or somethign else.

I am not going to format my PC just for Stellaris. I have lots of other games, I am also using it as a work station for homeoffice and I have no issues whatsoever.
I now see you have a gamepad plugged in, please try unplugging that before starting the game.

IF that doesn't help, In the game launcher please set Display mode to Borderless.

IF that doesn't help, Please do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere, and user_empire_designs.txt from /Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/ if you have... Read more

Please try the following:

- unsubscribe from all mods
- delete the folder Documents/paradox/Stellaris/mod/
- delete the file Documents/paradox/Stellaris/mods_registry.json
- delete the file Documents/paradox/Stellaris/launcher-v2.sqlite
- subscribe to a few mods
- run the game up and see if those mods are now available to you.

I hope that does it for you!

Is it just in one particular campaign/galaxy, or also any new one you might start as a test?

Does it matter who is host?

Cap Awesome said: It also can't be our connection as we are geographically very close
FYI that is not relevant, and all MP goes via either the Steam or Paradox MP servers. Which brings up a point - have you tried all opting into the stellaris_test game beta, which uses the PDX servers?

Delete the following folders if still present:

That's an odd one .. some of the Stellaris crashes are in LightFX.dll (which I've not seen before) and some in the Windows module ntdll.dll . Not sure what to make of that to be honest!

Exit the Steam app entirely and run stellaris.exe by itself. Is there any error when it fails now?
