I don't know how or why editing one empire caused the loss of others in that same file, I'm sorry to say! Nothing makes any sense, even a game bug really.

Can you repro the issue with those steps, are you saying?

I have exactly the same problem, i cant seem to find the thread that you said in your post. Can you send me a link?
If you can't find it you are welcome to make a new thread there. That is if this only happens to you when you have a huge empire on the map, is that right?

I don't know then, I can't think of anything else that would cause this. Did you also add steam.exe and stellaris.exe to its exceptions?

Where were those 8 copies of that file? Because there can only be one in any given folder, and the game will only read the one in the Documents/paradox/stellaris/ folder.

What antivirus do you use? We've had recent issues with AVG and Avast in particular stopping the game from accessing that folder properly.

Ah, the infamous Open NUL issue!

If you are okay with using the registry editor.

Run regedit.exe and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Services/Null . Check the Start key there. If that has a value of anything but 2 (usually 4), please change it to 2. Exit regedit and reboot, then Please try this:

- exit the Steam app entirely
- uninstall Paradox Launcher v2 from the Windows "Apps and features" utility, if still present.

Delete the following folders if still present:

- C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users//AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users//AppData/Roaming/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer.

- run steam.exe as the Windows Admin user

- run the game from the PLAY button in Steam

IF that doesn't help, in this folder are s... Read more

That's the one we have most trouble with, I'm afraid! I assume it has a list of what apps it blocked recently, go into that and tell it not to block this game or our launcher any more.

Good luck!

Not a tech support issue so moved to main forum. If the community agrees it's likely to be a bug, post in Bug Reports please.

In the game launcher please set Display mode to windowed.

IF that doesn't help, Install ALL these Microsoft modules:

Download Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86) from Official Microsoft Download Center

Please try the following:

- unsubscribe from all mods
- delete the folder Documents/paradox/Stellaris/mod/
- delete the file Documents/paradox/Stellaris/mods_registry.json
- delete the file Documents/paradox/Stellaris/launcher-v2.sqlite

Add Stellaris.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list. You should add steam.exe and C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2.2021.1/paradox launcher.exe to that list.

- subscribe to a few mods
- run the game up and see if those mods are now available to you.

I hope that does it for you!

zulu9812 said: No. The closest I have is C:\Users\Vince\AppData\Local\Paradox Interactive\launcher-v2, which has a .log file and 2 folders named chromium data and logs
That's the wrong path, you are missing the /programs/ part. You found the 2020.16 sub folder here, as 2021.1 runs there must be a similar 2021.1 folder too, with the .exe in it!

This is definitely an antivirus app getting in the way:
[17:25:45][virtualfilesystem_physfs.cpp:1193]: Could not open file: settings.txt, error: permission denied
Which one do you use?

Here is that process:

- move any valued save games elsewhere, and user_empire_designs.txt from /Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/ if you have made any custom empires or races.
- "uninstall" in Steam-Stellaris
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/Stellaris AND Documents/Paradox/Stellaris folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- start the game with no mods active and test

In particular you need to make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam Stellaris or Documents Stellaris locations, before installing again.

Well no, the 2020.16 file path does not contain the 2021.1 launcher .exe ! Each new version makes its own appropriately-named new folder. Do you not see a folder with 2021.1 in the name just there?

Do the mod files appear in Documents/paradox/CK3/mod/ now?

As you are now on launcher 2021.1 you'll need to add that new exception to AVG.

Okay, well if you try that please let us know - if you both get it with some 3rd person it's very likely a bug, but if only one of you get it that person has some local issue.
