Hey CMDR.

You don't have to buy the Odyssey DLC if you don't want it, bearing in mind that it does not have full VR support. This will just be a matter of personal choice. If you do want the DLC, you can buy direct from the Frontier store to continue to access the game standalone, or buy from Steam if you intend to keep playing there (this copy will then only ever be accessible through Steam).

You'll want to be playing the Live version of Horizons though (4.0) unless you don't mind staying on the Legacy version which is now entirely separate, and no longer receiving any gameplay updates. Do just be aware that any progress you make here will not be mirrored on the Live version, so if you decide to switch at any point you'll be starting from scratch again.

You don't have to use SteamVR to play in VR. You can run the game entirely standalone and utilise your Oculus (or other relevant) software.

We've had numerous reports of the game crashing at shader prep since maintenance this morning, and the development team are currently looking into it. There's unfortunately not much else I can tell you at this stage, but we'll hopefully figure out what's behind this soon.
